Warning PSD NG

Hello,

So my faithful 3 year old DVX100 was out on a job tonight w/o me and I get a call (while I'm in the middle of a show as well) and it's giving this error - WARNING PSD NG. Which I now find in the manual (my friend who was using the camera went online and found a DVinfo posting about the same error and that they'd kept shooting, so they tried Playback and when it was good they continued.

So from what I've found it's a problem with the OIS "detecting shake". ??

I did a search here but only went thru the first 50 or so msgs. "PSD Warning" got no hits but when I added "Error" to the search I got a lot, but so far none about this error.

How common is this? What seems to be the usual culprit?

Thanks for any help.

MR

There is a technical bulletin for this fault. Check with your local Panasonic service centre.

Well I'd hoped someone would point me to a link where any bulletin was posted. or have some experience with this fault.
I wish for this shoot I was just on that the warning would've gone away when I turned off OIS. Because why would it matter if it couldn't detect "shake" IF I wasn't trying to correct for it? ;-)
Since I usually use the "spot meter" mode rather than either zebra setting the warning blew that away.

Incidentally on the third night the evening began with out the warning, but as soon as I'd mounted the camera on my monopod it came back.
Is there any connection? could any overtightening of a tripod or monopod strain anything in the bottom of the camera and cause circuit problems? I know of some Arriflex 16SRs that people put too long of a screw thru their tripod plates and it actually broke a diode on the main circuit board. . .
Now I've seen a DVX100 with the threads split from somene over tightening, and frankly was shocked, I didn't ask but figured a too long screw was involved.
A friend of mine was covering for me on the first two nights of this shoot, but he's fairly conscientious and a long time professional. . .

This is the technical bulletin number, described as "countermeasure for warning message PSD NG"
Unfortunately technical bulletins are only availble to service divisions so you would have to contact your local Panasonic Service department for repair/modification.
Hope this helps.....

MRFilm,

We see this problem often. It usually requires a ribbon cable re-enforcement panel (hence the bulletin). Sometimes though, we have found that the bulletin isn't always the problem. We have a repair process that we perform to the lens. Those two things work about 95% of the time. The other 5% we need to change out the entire lens assembly. VERY rare though!

NOTE: You need to make sure that your service center has all of the collimation software and jigs to perform the needed back-focus adjustments before they estimate for lens replacement! If not, than your gonna get a blurry DVX back!

AJ101,

Thanks for the intel.

I now have a couple of leads on service providers and this should help speed things along.

Have a great one!

An update, especially if there's anyone else in the Nashville, Tn area who needs service.

Thanks for the help Andrew & AJ101.

I found at our local camera rental house one of the best video engineers in town has set up an office and now not only works on all of the big broadcast gear but also the pro-sumer stuff as well.

He got the tech bulletin from Panasonic (actually he may have already had it) and was able to repair my camera in only a couple of hours (shop time), in my case the ribbon cable that controls the OIS had only come unplugged. While he was in he cleaned my heads and tape path as well.

Tom Hoffman working out of AC Inc.

ciao,

Hi. I'm having the exact same problem with my dvx-100. I spoke with an AC friend of mine who is in and out of AC, Inc. frequently and he doesn't recollect a gentleman named Tom Hoffman. Is it possible he's moved on to somewhere else that I can locate him? Also, how much did this work cost for your particular situation? Thanks very much for your time.

Best,

Despite the earlier snippy responses by others, most of us are here to help, teach, and learn from each other.
That said, I had the psd ng error issue a while back. I found the following thread & went through the steps & have not had a problem since. It will save the several hundred dollars to send it in, and reduce the down time of not having the camera for use. If you feel comfy with taking apart the camera, it all boils down to reseating a few cables.
