wanting to buy a mkii

I just got my federal refund, and I'm looking to invest it into a 5D mkii (my first DSLR). I've been hearing a lot of rumors lately of canon coming out with upgraded models (mkiii/6D). So if I get a mkii now, I'm worried the prices will drop with people looking to sell and upgrade within a few months.

Any advice on the subject?

Truth is no one knows if or when a 5d Mark III or whatever is coming out. Historically it should be out this year, but no one is saying for certain yet. So will price drop on the 5d if it shows up..sure. But I dont think it will be a huge drop. So if you wait for the latest greatest you will just end up never buying anything.

+1 I do have a feeling that a new 1DS will appear before a 5DmkIII though, which will give us a nice preview of whatever improvements they've made to the video.

True. I'm pretty wary when plunging into new technologies. The same thing happened when I got my letus adapter, it was right before 35mm adapters were getting less popular, and right before the dslr revolution.

EDIT: I'm also tempted to just wait for an official announcement for the mkiii/6d to see what kind of improvements they've made to the all the setbacks that come with the mkii.

Agreed. There was about 3 years between the 5D and the 5DmkII, and that 3 year mark is coming up around August/September, which is typically where a semi-pro camera shows up. (The past 3 years, it's been 60D in fall 2010, 7D in fall 2009, 5DmkII in fall 2008)

More to the point, you can buy used and resell it when the new camera comes out. Most you're going to lose with that route is maybe $200-$300, which is a pretty good deal if you have a need for a camera right away. You're basically renting it. In addition to that, you can avoid buying 5D specific gear and alleviate yourself from stuff that'll quickly become obsolete.

Or buy a 60D and spend the extra money on lenses. I'm actually seriously considering selling my 5D and getting one of those instead.
