[FS: General] WANTED- Prosumer Cameras FOR SCHOOL

I have gotten the opportunity to start a video production program at the school I teach at. Problem is we have no money to buy equipment.

I am looking for older cameras with pro features that might have an issue (tape transport not working, cosmetically broken, tons of hours, etc). I can not provide any money other than shipping costs and a tax receipt that you could write off on your taxes.

I know its a long shot, but if you have any equipment, message me and let me know what you have and the shipping costs to Tennessee. Who knows- your equipment may get in the hands of the next George Lucas!

Thanks!

why does it have to be prosumer? Not being judgemental, I just fear that you won't get any responses because I don't see how anyone would get rid of a prosumer (expensive) camera or free. If it's just a nascent program and not something terribly advanced I don't see why they can't learn on more consumer-ish products like DSLR's unless we have our definitions mixed up and you consider higher end DSLR's like the Canon 5d/7d, GH1 etc "prosumer" then I get your drift though I still doubt anyone would ever part with one of those for free especially since even broken they can still sell for high amounts. (Broken GH1 sold for about 450$ here a few months ago.)

Homunculus,
As I stated in the original post, I am looking for cameras with pro features. Most cheap consumer cameras do not have these features. I also stated that I was looking for older cameras. Cameras like the old EZ1 and TRV900 are great cameras, but are not on the "cutting edge." Some of these cameras have issues that make them not worth selling. The tax write off is worth more or close to the amount they could sell it for. As far as DSLR's, if someone has one, I will gladly take it, but they are so new, they still have pretty decent value if they are not working properly.

My goal is to expose these students to some better cameras than they would typically use and get used to manually focusing or manually controlling the iris.

Finally, as I mentioned in my post, I understand it is a long shot, but it can't hurt to ask. There are people out there with older equipment sitting in a dark closet that has not been used for several years, and some of those people would rather see their equipment at least being used for a good purpose.

Zazacast,
Sorry, Lucas was the first one that came to mind- my kids are in to Star Wars now;-)
I am teaching an intro to video production. We are focusing on live production, shooting, and editing. Its a very broad class.

I was very fortunate to start out on DVX100Bs and XL1s for my video classes in high school in TN. If I were wealthy from it all I'd def. put money back into programs like the one I went through - they are worth every minute of class time.

I wish you luck!

You can always try renting a camera for a day once a week or every couple of weeks, it wont be free but its not that big of an expense.

Or you could try to get a deal with a renting company i.e. you advertise their shop / product and they let you take stuff out every now and then...
Could also be worth a try :)

I will tell you that my teacher got her program funded exponentially because of the films her students were producing and winning awards all across the south east. It took her a while to gather all the equipment that she had when I went through the program. Now I go back and visit and find 30+ edit bays, 12+prosumer cameras. She used that success to convince the school to give her more funding.

tayprodcutions ah I understand. Did not know you were looking for possibly such old stuff like trv900.

and it's true it doesn't hurt to ask. But you should try craigslist also, put an ad out there. Decent chance someone there has some of that old or broken stuff as I see similar ads on there all the time. And if you're in some backwater town, put the ad out in a metropolitan area like NYC so there's more chance someone will have something then just tell them to ship it to you etc.
