Wall-E

Thanks. I went back a few pages but didn't see it. I thought for sure it had more replies than that.

Maybe the two topics should be merged.

I agree. It was because I couldn't find it in the first place that I created this thread.

I thought it was way over hyped for a pixar film. Not in the least their best. I don't know where the hype came from. It was not because it was an outstanding pixar picture. It wasn't. Actually my least favourite from them so far. Hmmph. Soooooo. Maybe that's why it was hyped so much? To counteract how lame it was?

The story was lame, the graphics were supposed to be 'so realistic', cmon. It's animation. It's NOT supposed to be realistic in fact it purposly is not supposed to look real. That's for stuff like 'Terminator', 'Alien' and the multitudes of other special effects artists that know thier job. Not Pixar making 'real' looking buildings and landscapes in a peusdo cartoon. cmon.

Guess I'm a bit late in responding. Not happy with this release at all from pixar, on any level. Nothing worked for me, 'at' 'all'. Wow. Oh well, they are allowed a dud now and then. The new stuff looks better as they have reverted to the 'toon' and comedy bits. Looks pretty good.

I'll go back and read the thread and see exactly where I missed the mark, assuming I'm alone on this one, haha.

//After a brief skim reading most of the content I concede for 4 yr olds it may be a great film. Which brings my thoughts to the fact that I had never even seen a TV show until I was seven. And whyyyyyy does a four year old have to see a film? Let alone digest it's content? A rhetorical question I ask myself but respond if you feel like it. And while I'm here, whyyyyyyy do little 6 yr old kids need to see rock bands or childrens party bands (barf) on thier birthdays? Most importantly....whyyyyy do kids need entertainment at all? Arrghhhhh, I'm ranting again, haha.

I guess I'm old school. I don't understand this need to spoon feed entertainment to children who otherwise could use thier imagination, as, ya know, WE DID, growing up.

But yeah, back to the point, NOT a good pixar movie. :):):)

i disagree they we headed to a different direction. much like japanese animation its more serious toned where our animation tends to be just for happy times. my favorite animated film, grave of the fireflies.

I'm no expert on Japanese animation, but how can you even equate what they are doing to that pixar film, or are you? The Japanese things I've seen are mostly 2D or 2.5D adaptions. Which they do very well. I just don't see the connection. And I don't think pixar is headed in any kind of different direction, in fact I believe they are going back to their roots. I think Wall-E was an experiement that failed. That's acceptable. You can't push the boundaries without sometimes going over. I think they realize that and have acted accordingly. Am I wrong? I don't think so, not by what I've seen from the 2 new trailers.

Maybe story wise is what your suggesting and that may be. But maybe they should let the Japanese handle that for what they are doing. It just confuses me a bit. Both are good at what they do. Why try to emulate anyone if your a leader? Both are experts in thier own area. That's all I'm saying.

//Oh, I think I misunderstood your comment. Sorry Spidey.:) But yeah, the crux of what I said I still stand by. Pixars direction I mean. I think they've come back to their roots since Wall-E. :)

You're not a good pixar movie.

Haha - but in all seriousness - I found it to be really cute. I cried. The end.

critically it the best film and best looking i mean they had roger deakins! granted. the latter half of the film goes back to the kids but its message is good. I think the film shows what the world could be like and the isolationism is great.

But I do think we could do more in animated films beyond happy films.

i mean look at this film.

Spoilers

a story about a brother and sister taking care of one another after hiroshima bomb attacks in the 1940's. Their father and mother is killed in the attacks. they live in an out mine and try to steal to survive eventually they die from malnutrition... one of the best animated films with a great story. Now imagine with pixar power... studio Ghibli is also the best of 2D animation.... I love traditionalism animation but 3d is awesome as well.

I've watched the first two spidey and felt the second was better(will watch the third after this). I have an honest question though. Do you think this is suitable material for a child to watch? I don't mean the rating, I mean the content. Will a typical child in Japan understand the story? What age group target do you think this would cover? Not withstanding the grownups. Just curious. I'm curious as to how it's recieved by the target market.

In other words, I don't know what is the norm in Japan. Is this standard kids TV stuff? :)

//Or is it for adults? Sorry man, I'm not too much up on the culture. Love to go there sometime. :)

animation typical in Japan is aimed at all audience till a you get to ultra violent and hentai related materials. I saw grave of the fireflies at 8 and it was very powerful and emotional. I cried. I think its ok to make kids feel other emotions beyond joy in animated work. its like watching kurosawa work but animated. anyone could watch it, it just comprehending it and if one can handle work of that nature. not like im saying they should make depressing films but variety is always good.

Wow. See. That never would happen in North america. Maybe a fairy tale of sorts I suppose, like the Wizard of Oz. Hmmm. Thanks for sharing that. Interesting.
Thanks man.

I saw Grave of the Fireflies when I was young as well and it blew my mind that "cartoons" could even be made that way. It was definitely a great introduction to Japanese animation.

You are not alone. Stopped watching after 30 minutes I think. Was interesting and a little bit cute for about 15 minutes and then I got bored. Should have been a short film.

And about the japanese stuff. Well, the world is not only a good and fun place. Kids should learn this aswell. Is there a better way to do this than with a cartoon/animation? Besides talking with your children of course.

And you should definitely visit Japan Raptor! Such a cool country :)

Apparently Pixar doesn't think Wall-E is a failure because there's Oscar buzz about it being considered for Best Picture, not just Best Animated movie... I've been reading alot about this from critics. I myself haven't seen the film so I can't judge.

That may be. But I doubt whether it's nominated for an Oscar or not would sway Pixars opinion on wether it was a failure or not. It dosen't sway mine. Then again, I should be so lucky to have a failure be nominated for an academy award. :) But you may well be right.

Again, I personally didn't see any innovation of the kind I would expect from Pixar.

The person in my avatar, who passed last year, was also up for a Academy award when younger but lost out to Disney. A documentary on him more recently however did win the award. His last film contribution will be realesed soon...

That's what I like to see recognized as innovation, or at least noted. There's a couple others that are not up for awards for minor technical reasons but the innovation is there.
I don't think Wall-E being nominated is anything but a corporate shindig. I want to say I'm sorry for feeling that way but I can't.

As for whether or not I know Pixar, maybe not, but I have all of their movies and have seen them many times. Last year I didn't know them from Blue Sky but I think I've fixed that end up a bit since then.

Pixars new release 'Up' looks really good though as far as entertainment value.
Anyways, that's my 2cents and more, haha. Alllllrighty then. I'm done with it.
