Re: VW Spec Commercial, 30 sec.

Thanks guys. The dog gets all of the credit for the DirectTV spot.

Re: VW Spec Commercial, 30 sec.

I liked it! It had the VW feel to it.

Re: VW Spec Commercial, 30 sec.

I'm feeling it... nice long cuts - visually, it looks really hi-end.

Re: VW Spec Commercial, 30 sec.

I really enjoyed your spec ad. I also checked out the others on your site, and they all have a polished, professional feeling about them.

I am not trying to suggest this was not your idea, but if you plan to use it as a spec ad and get more work from it, you should know this is a very similar concept to a short called 'Confidence', staring Robert Downey Jr. on the Volvo website. Again, I mean no disrespect in telling you this. I am only giving you a 'heads-up' so you're aware. This was a widely run campaign in Europe, I don't know if it was also in the States.

(Give it a few seconds to go through some of it's flash animation, and then you can choose to watch the film from the menu on the lower left. The short is very clever.)

The Volvo short aside, this was a very well produced ad with great color and excellent results. Technically, I think it could stand up to any commercials currently broadcast.

Well done.

Yes, I have seen it as well. Looks very similar.

Nice ad man. I liked it. Even though, it is similar to the other, it was quite cool.

Were all your ads shot with the DVX?

All the best

Fidel.

Re: VW Spec Commercial, 30 sec.

Again, thanks for all of the encouraging words. The intent for these specs is to put together a directors reel in order to sell, well, me! As far as the Volvo short, I hadn't seen it until now. Funny how ideas work. And finally, the only two spots on my site that I shot with the DVX are VW and iPod. Here's a link to the second one.
Question when doing a spec spot who do you send it to?
I am going to try and avoid going into a long rant about this subject...BUT...

People should make spec commercials to break into advertising or become a spot director. There are very rare cases where spec work will sell, but very rarely, and usually if it does it's spec work done on behalf of an ad agency who already has that client on their roster.

I think one should have realistic goals and expectations for doing spec work. The primary reason: build your reel and get experience. Doing spec work won we some awards, a little money and ultimately got me a job. I pushed and shoved to get my work in front of right people, sometimes I got people's attention, other times I didn't...however, I never once had a company even consider buying the concept (but it did ultimately get me a job).

So from my experiences, I HIGHLY encourage it, just don't expect to sell it and make a business out of it.
