VuAir - a new perspective

Hi Everyone,

My name is Andre and I'm a design engineer
, filmmaker and pilot based in Sheffield, UK.

I've developed a very interesting of capturing aerial video that
really adds a different perspective and I'm thinking of starting a business
. Therefore I would like to know people's oppinion on it.

http://pdfcast.org/pdf/vuair-questionaire

On the link above you'll find a VERY SHORT pdf questionnaire (only 3Qs) also with links to my videos and a very short discription should you be interested in knowing more.

It is really important for me to realise if this is a silly idea or an actual service the industry would benefit from.

Many Thanks
Andre

VuAir - A new perspective

Footage looks really good. It's pretty stable and it looks like you have excellent control and are able to get shots that the oktokopters can't. For me it's not really a service that I'd have much use for, but if you were able to get a bigger payload (DSLR) I would be much more interested. As it is I think there could be a lot of interest in extreme sports, business promos, etc. The only major limitation that I see there is being limited to a GoPro (as much as they've gotten better).

What's most interesting to me is the range you have in your shots. It looks like the pilot actually flys via video feed, is this correct? How far are you able to go on your shots?

Yes, there are many people doing this as a business, so it's not a silly idea, the key is going to be how you'll differentiate yourself from the rest of the competition. I think for you, it may be that you're able to show how far/long you're able to go on your shots.

I noticed you have some Steve Peat footage in your reel, did you do any camera work for The Collective? I would think the long range shots would be perfect for your setup.

I agree though, try to figure out how to rig a better camera on there. I'd try a Sony HX9V first, then move up from there.

Good luck.

Thanks Stefan, yes I get your point. The GoPro and plane to go with it is simply the stage I am at the moment, but going forward I want innovation to have a centre role in the business and feedback so far is exactly that of getting a more professional camera airborne.

Bruce, yes I fly via the video. How high and how far I can fly is pretty much full sized aircraft territory. Its not limited by the equipment or safety. Actually the biggest hurdle to overcome (here in the UK and US) is the legislation on it as it hasn't quite cached up to current technology. VuAir has a partnership with QuickFeet, a video production company, and that's where Steve's footage comes from.

Any chance you guys can drop me an email on vuair@europe.com regarding the last two questions even if they are conservative just to get a ballpark idea. Thanks!

My first response is how much would it cost to buy the setup? And would you be able to sell them? Or is this a prototype that only you will use? I see this market divided between people who need the footage and people who produce it. The production seems to be local, lower end or ultra high end with the gyros. Are you thinking to be a provider of services or a provider of the equipment?

At the start I would be more inclined to offer a service and see how it goes, but yes later I would like to explore the possibility of providing equipment too.
