VOB to AVI files???? HELP!

Hey gang-

A few months ago, I exported an MPEG file from Premiere directly to a DVD. If I open it up, its listed as a VOB file. Thing is, I need to get this movie BACK into Premiere PRO (preferably with little or no quality loss) but for the LIFE of me cannot figure out how to do this.

Premiere wouldn't recognize the file (even though IT made it), Quicktime won't recognize it either. I was thinking of trying to convert the file to AVI but am having a time trying to find relaiable software that will allow me to do this.

Please offer any advice you can!

Its much appreciated!

I have tried different solutions to this.
DVD2AVI (free program) though I have had problems.
Windows Media Encoder (again free) also have had problems...
Another way was to just change file name from .vob to .avi, you can watch it, but I was only able to import to after effects, not premier pro with that solution... ARG!!!!

this is after I used dvd shrink to get it to my hard drive.

Anyway one of those might help you.

Thanks so much! I will definitely give one or ALL of these a shot. I am 98% done with this project but this 7 minute clip is KILLING me.

I saw many VOB converters out there for $35 dollars on up. But, I don't want to pay it if I don't have to. I have a feeling the solution is going to cause me to go "duh". But, I don't care at this point. I am desperate to get this project completed!

Thanks!

rename the xtension from .vob to .mpeg. Premiere pro will now be able to import it (of course you are editing a presentation format but thats your choice)

Thing is, its not letting me. I have the Standard VIDEO_FILE folder. And when I go in, there is the movie icon, but its called VTS_01_1. I can rename it and add an avi to it (there is no VOB extension on it. Its listed as a VOB file in properties though) but when I hit enter, the icon stays the same. It doesn't budge. It does not change into the RED_YELLOW-BLUE-& GREEN avi/windows media player ICON we are all accustomed to. Its maddening. I am running out of time....I may have to, dare I say it, BUY VOB Conversion software! Ugh. I wouldn't mind so much but I know there is a solution to this.

you have to go into tools--->folder options---->view and uncheck "Hide extensions for know file types" then you can alter a files extension and change it to a .mpeg (because that is what it really is)

eg- thanks so much for the tip! I appreciate it.

I tried that, was able to change the extention no problem, but PPro STILL didn't like it. And when I viewed the clip with Windows Media Player, with the new extention, it had horrible sound distortion. So, I had to change it back. At this point, I am going to try to eek out enough time today to re-edit the thing. Sucks too because the original took me a weekend.

Also, last night, I purchased Xilisoft software for $35 bucks. I wanted to avoid this because its all so sketchy. Well, after waiting 3 hours for it to convert, there were just horrible digital artifacts all over the place making the footage look unusable in my eyes. So, I guess its back to the cutting room. ugh.

You can always play the DVD and record it on your camera. I think you can even use the firewire on the DVX as an output and capture it on Premiere at the same time.

Another software that works well for converting DVD to avi is Cinematize.

I'm tellin ya, so many crazy pieces of advice. I have used em, but its like they only work here and there. Sumfun is right, it may be best to play dvd hooked up to your camera, with firewire... capture in Premier Pro just like it was coming from the camera.

Thanks guys. I bought Xilisoft to convert the 7 minute file for $35 bucks. What a freaking waste of money. It took nearly 2 hours to convert and there were digital artifacts all OVER the place. Junk.

I wound up re-editing the piece. Thank God I was familiar with it so it didn't take nearly as long as when it was first cut. But, I learned a lot in trying to convert. Plus, the re-edit looks so much better anyway.

Thanks again everybody.
