GH4 VLog-L test for skin tones

I shot internal 4k and instead of using a lut I used a preset in MBL called log grading power suite. In Sony Vegas they have a setting in properties called pixel format and when I choose 32 floating point video levels, the macro blocking is much reduced and alot less banding.

I am still learning how to expose for this but so far I really like like they way it looks.

David, yes with all the bad talk about it around here I almost canceled my order but decided to keep it and give it a try. Glad I did. I think it gives the footage a rich quality that I have not been able to get easily with the other profiles

Yeah, looks really good. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to grade it in post. I don't like any of the LUTs that supposedly get you a good start, so I've just been grading from scratch. I can tell that exposure really makes a difference though, I think you unintentionally proved that as well. Looks like your shot was well lit.

only a matter of time before the skeptics analyze at 400% crop

I was thinking the exact same thing! It won't take long I suspect...

Great skin tones btw! V-log is a lot better in that any many other respects than any of the other profiles IMHO. Did you soften the footage any in post. Am I imagining it or is there a glow to her face?

Hi Drew, Yes I softened the skin tones just a tad to take away that 4k harshness but the make up artist deserves most of the credit. For anyone that is using vlog and has magic bullet looks I would urge you to look at the preset of log grading power suite. it gives a good head start of getting the picture about 95 percent there but also has all the tools in the preset to adjust as needed. I have tried at least a dozen luts and for my taste that preset is my favorite for general shooting.

Sorry to say but in my eyes the vlog treatment has sucked life out of the model and image. I see flattened tones like there is too much orange powder in skin and no natural variations. Hairs are soft mush. There are also color errors and banding in background. The image looks like it was shooted something like iso800 or more.
