VLC video file?

All of my MTS video files stored in my computer and my network have inexplicably gone from Windows files to a file called "VLC" with a orange pylon icon. Does anyone know how this could have happened? Will it mess up my files? Is there anyway to go back to have them showing as Windows files? Thanks.

It will not hurt anything. Just means the file will open with VLC. If you want to change it back, right click the file, go to properties and choose "open with windows media player or any other player listed".

It will not mess up your files - nothing has been done to them. The orange pylon icon is VLC's icon, nothing to alarm you. This just means, when you installed VLC Media Player, that VLC's preferences were to be the default player for your MTS files. You can change this by going to Start Menu-->Default Programs-->Associate a file type...This will allow you to set a default player per known file type.

You can also turn off the MTS file association in VLC by doing the same: Tools-->Preferences-->Video-->Set up associations...

With Windows you you should always show the file extension also. Go to the windows folder options and untick "hide extensions for known file types". It's just more convenient, and also way safer this way.
