VLC media player plays AVCHD on Apple

I never saw this program mentioned before here. I just downloaded and installed it on my Apple and it plays .mts files perfectly. Drag the "stream" folder to the VLC icon and it opens the first .mts file and you can easily navigate to the other files in the same folder. VLC media player is open source, free.

That's weird, it doesn't work for me. I get this glitchy interlacing stuff happening on top of the video.

Can't say I think much of the VLC player for AVCHD either - at least on a Mac.

The best player I've come across is the Toast Video Player which uses the Elgato player.

I'm with tflak. VLC has way too many artifacts when playing .mts files from GH1. Image no. 1 a on-the-fly screengrab from VLC, no. 2 how the frame actually looks after converted with Toast or if played with Toast's player.

Ok maybe I was a bit over-enthusiastic when I wrote "perfectly". I viewed some videos last night and with fast pans/moves, the VLC player loses track and distortion appears. But what I like is that I can view videos full screen now without having to convert which saves time and disk space. I would use this for previewing and deciding which parts of the raw footage to convert to ProRes. Also, don't forget, VLC player is open source which means that people around the world contstantly are working on improvements!

Mkeep and Nitsuj... I just played some videos again, it's a late 2009 MacBookPro17, and it really works fine, no glitchy interlacing stuff happening on top of the video either. But you both are working in NTSC, right? My GH1 is PAL. So maybe the VLC player can't handle the reversed pulldown?

My screengrab is from a 720p PAL file and has no fast pans or moves...

VLC OSX version is more or less dead in the water since last year they can't find any mac developers to work on it.

This is what it gives me. Single pixel white horizontal lines every other line. Click to see a closeup. When it's scaled down it just looks whiter.

That turns out not to be the case. They are doing a new UI for it, or something like that, and don't have the resources to simultaneously work on the old one.
