Vitaliy has released Ntool

Just saw this today. Last night Vitaliy, the person who hacked the Panasonic camera's, released Ntool for the Nikon camera's much like he has Ptools for the Panasonic camera's. It's very limited and currently only has 2 hacks for a limited number of Nikon camera's, but it will be updated over time.

I made tool aimed at end users, based on some ideas of Simeon.

Unlike previous tool, it uses full fledged PTool engine and easy to run on Mac also (using Wine or WineBottler).
Version history
v2.0a
  • Added support for D7000 v1.03 (video limit and text patch).
  • Added support for D3100 v1.01 (video limit and text patch).
  • Added support for D5100 v1.01 (video limit and text patch).
  • Added support for J1 v1.11 (only text patch).
  • Added support for V1 v1.11 (only text patch)."

I you want to see how advanced Ptools is to get a good idea of where Ntools could go Here is the website.

I suggest you all become members of his forum Personal View and keep up to date and ask questions about Ntools.

It would be nice that the hack becomes as popular, but the D800 with external hdmi needs less of the hack than the gh2. Somehow it would be very nice if you could record internally as with the driftwood intra modes without the added cost of an external recorder.

Yes, the clean HDMI out of the D800 is a huge plus without hacking, but there still is need for a hack. For example, it would be nice to be able to record internally while still outputting 1080p (not 720p or 1080i).

It'll be interesting to see if Nikon or Vitaliy does this first: On the D800, enable manual adjustment of audio input levels while the cam is in record mode.

Although it'll be great if Vitaliy is able add functionality to the D800, I hope Nikon releases a firmware update with this feature added soon.

it would be wise of nikon , to work with vitaly and the hackers community and not against them , maybe even ask their advise and testing on how to bypass certain elements in the camera which is locked as of now , unlike panasonic which went against the hack , and tried to fight it with all their strength (released a gh1 locked , and than gh2) its still got hacked in spite of all their effort and benefit from those hacks
, i can understand them , because they have a video department to protect ,
nikon on the other hand can only benefit from such updates , its true that the d800 and the d4 clean HDMI is a huge plus without hacking but we still dont know what other potential can be Achieved , i see it as kind of a magic lantern to nikon rather than a hack

might be a dumb question... but what does this hack do on the d7000? it looks like it changes the 20 min video limit, but what is a "text patch". Yes i followed the links...
