Visual Language - The POV

Good to see someone is still really working today. Not another rick roll :)

Loved your article! Especially after I watched No Country last friday. Should watch it again soon.

I also planned to use POV in my Timefest entry. I feel even more confident about it now :)

Good post, JH. I have been obsessing over that film since I first saw it and re-watching it over and over. Nice breakdown. Those guys really are modern masters.

another technique at work in that scene is matching "eye-trace" -- meaning the subject of the viewer's attention is always on the same point of the frame across the cuts.

Excellent article.

Let me preface this by saying that I've not seen No Country for Old Men, so my comments are more general and less pointed to the Coen Brothers' Film.

I've always preferred my POV shots more ambiguous. I don't like elements that indicate "Hey, this is a POV" like the binocular effect in the breakdown, or more egregious: the binocular outline over the camera. The A/B shot of character, subject is much more my speed.

Oh great. NOW you post this. Where was this 2 hours ago when I was at work and could have got paid to read it?

I'll have to pour over this at my desk in greater detail tomorrow. Now that I'm home, I have to edit, ie. do real work.

you and me are in the same boat buddy (in terms of how we spend time at work.)

lucky for me, i'm still at work :2vrolijk_08:

Well, it's 11:30, and I'm done with my edit. Read the article now? Ahhhhh, I'm exhausted. I'm going to bed, I'll check it out tomorrow.

Not to threadjack, but Thomas, I saw your wedding video clip....you guessed it...today at work. Badass motion graphics, I'll have to put in a vote for you.

Thank you for the article! I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm going to make a movie. When does your next article come out?

I don't have time now, but I'll go over it when I get home. Looks great from what I saw, I had planned on using some POV in my TimeFest entry.

Thanks,

Great insight JR. I've read a couple of your other ones also. Jaws I think was the last one I saw. Interesting and quite informative. Do you always post them on that site?

Hitchcock said “If it’s a good movie, the sound could go off and the audience would still have a perfectly clear idea of what was going on.” And that, my friends is visual language.
Love the breakdown, love the movie.

Nice work, J.R.
