Visited Peter Jackson today...

I would say mostly for home movies. Seriously... if I were that rich, I'd buy the Varicam or a Sony F950. For WETA, I could see them using it for their scale-model sets (miniatures, I believe).

The best looking home movies. If you use an HVX you might be more careful on how you shoot it, light it. Think less "home movie" and more like "home documentary".

You have to do a bungy jump while you're there! I was there seven years ago, took my Sony Hi-8 cam on a jump with me. I was so nervous that I hit the record button turning it off by accident right before the jump! I got everything but the jump! Barry, you have to take an HVX on a jump! Do it now!

"NZ is a really, really cool place. Wellington has a certain San Francisco vibe to it. ... (other than a blanket of snow in July!)"

This really does sound like San Francisco in July!

heh - unfortunately Barry hit town right when we got nailed by a mean cyclonic blast.
Cold, gales, rain - you name it ...

Barry, I think i might have figured out what WETA is working on..... JAMES CAMERON'S AVATAR????????? Come clean!

One usage could be to get some real nice enviromental shoots. If you can put it on your backpack then you could take the HVX anywere to shoot were you dont want to airlift a 5 man crew.

Or Peter is maybe gonna shot an entire movie just to inspire the indy community. (wish thinking)

Awesome Barry ... just plain awesome.
Glad to hear all your hard work is paying of not just in $ but in fun and inspiring experiences as well.

Barry, can you ask Peter if he wants to adopt an Asian guy who can cook fried rice rotoscope with his eyes closed?

:)

Very Cool Berry, I can only imagine the tour of Weta you got. Most have been something to behold. It would be awesome of Peter would become a DVXuser. Would that just be a grate addition to the community.

Though I'm very impressed with WETA Digital, why wouldn't James Cameron use Digital Domain the company he co-created to do The Abyss Special Edition, True Lies, and Titanic?

Though I will say my favorite special effects blockbuster of the last few years was I, Robot and both Digital Domain and WETA were the effects houses on that project and it was amazing.

My .02 is that the HVX will be used to get POV shots for the Halo feature. Small, compact, rugged with solid-state recording? Sounds perfect to be running through corridors with combat going on.

While WETA is definitely a cool place, Park Road Post is phenomenal. It is truly a filmmaker's paradise -come in, edit your film in comfort and let the creativity flow...this was PJ's vision of the place, and it is quite simply awesome. On a tour of the facilities we were able to watch a 35mm print of LOTR with the elephant battle sequence in its full glory -including multi-channel surround sound- as the man himself wanted the film to be enjoyed.

..hmm just finally read the thread.. way way too cool. mustve been somewhat surreal, as even reading about it seems a little so to me. definitely cool barry.

For a start, Cameron had a big faling out with DD just after Titanic, he & Stan Winston resigned from the board of directors.

Secondly and probably more important..... Digital Domain was recently sold, lock stock and barrel to a new investment group, headed by none other than Michael Bay.

Other forums on the net are reporting that WETA will handle something like 2000 FX shots for Cameron's AVATAR, including a great deal of motion capture work (think KONG and Gollum). The only thing that surprises me is that Cameron would choose WETA over ILM, a company Cameron has a long history with.

Wow that's facinating. And this is total opinion but over the last few years I think WETA has done vastly superior work to ILM.

Gotta love hollywood politics. ;)

I don't really agree with this, as Revenge of the Sith had fx superior to King Kong (especially in terms of scale), but that's just my opinion. The two houses are on par with each other.

I doubt PJ himself would become a member of the community (although of course he'd be most welcome). I can say that I know for a fact that others who work with him are members here though!

Yeah I am sure he is a very bussy man and I think it is fantastic that there are members on here from so many post house including Weta. But none the less it would be interesting if PJ would stop by. Also Barry I was wondering if you could tell us a little what PJ and the weta boys are doing with the HVX that is if you can

NDA prevents me from saying. I lobbied long and hard to let me post some footage or talk about what they're doing, and there was just no way. But, persistent sort that I am, I will continue to nag them every once in a while!
