VaricamLT: Visit to Panasonic, Osaka with the VaricamLT team

Hey, me again. Sorry for all the questions hehe...

Just something that I found out these days is that the sensor has an active area of 4448 (H) × 2308(V) pixels. Do you know if there's any chance off getting an "open gate" recording mode? Would be really good for having some extra pixels to crop (stabilization and others).

And one last thing that crossed my mind: is it possible to make a speed booster for this camera (if there's enough distance)? A Full Frame to S35 would be nice... especially for 60+fps slow motion, since its cropped.

Cheers!

Id guess an Open Gate mode would be possible with RAW, though unsure if hardware wise it can be done.

Just to clarify 60fps is S35 4K, anything above is cropped. Im sure thats what you meant, just reads ambiguous. However, there's no mirror, so I guess also technically its possible for a speed booster to be made. Harass Metabones for the answer to that. I'd be interested if they did make one.

Thanks Noel.

Yeah I was talking about above 60 fps. Sorry if it read ambiguous. Thanks for your time in doing this.

And lets hope they are looking at some of this things... it will just make a great camera even greater.

Cheers!

One thing I wanted to add that I forgot to mention. On the wifi dongle, I suggested to panasonic to close that up and just build it in. Should be part of the base system.

LT Codec workflow: At the moment the only software that reads it is Resolve and there's an issue in how it's doing it. They are working with BM to fix this and deliver LT codec support to all NLE's as a matter of urgency.

Forgot to post, but most already probably are aware that the latest resolve update fixed the issue with the LT Codec.

Outside of image quality, the fact the LT codec is not compatible with Avid is a real issue for post workflow in the market segments I assume they are aiming for.

Don't get me wrong Resolve is an outstanding package its just if they want to get serious about cinema they need to have the codec compatible with the leading NLE for cinema /tv without it they are limiting the cameras potential.

All coming soon.

@Noel - I know someone previously asked this, but do you think open gate mode is likely to happen? The reason I ask is because this would allow the Varicam LT to compete in that category with the newly announced C700... Just wondering :)

I have asked this question. Currently waiting.

Could you pass the below suggestion to the Panasonic people or get me in touch with them?

I believe the Varicam LT should include the 4K AVC-INTRA 444 codec as found on the varicam35 because if one wants to use the cameras together as A and B cam especially on a VFX or greenscreen shoot they both would need to shoot the 444 codec.

The issue is that the LT doesn't have the processing power for 444. In this case I'd look at going RAW.
