virtues of the dsr-11

will some kind soul tell me the virtues of using an expensive deck like the dsr11 versus some second hand ebay mini dv camera?

A deck is much more responsive for log&capture and (in case of the DSR-11) more versatile because you can use mini-DV as well as DV-Cam in NTSC and PAL. If you used a good deck for log&cap once you'll find it very hard going back to a cheap cam ...

True moebius. I use the decks at school. And, I use my mini DV 1 chip cam at home. However, I find the price point of the dedicated deck is absolutely ridiculous. $1,100 dollars??? No thanks. They need to drop that number by several hundred to be a realistic option for me and I imagine a few others.

I mean, you are ONLY using the deck to capture. Period. If the deck had other functions I could see the point. But, I just can't. It's like having a choice of a limo ride to the airport or a Yugo. If you are ONLY using the ride to get to the airport, to serve that 1 function, why spend several hundred dollars when you could spend pennies? It just makes little or no sense to me.

Try doing it all the time and you'll see the benefits fairly quickly. also, the DSR-11 is one of the very few DV/DVCAM decks, which can be very useful. We had a DSR-11 until recently, replaced it with a DSR-40... and then discovered that the DSR-40 is DVCAM *only*! It's not that big of a deal, really, since we rarely need to output tapes for people without DVCAM equipment to view, but it came as a bit of a surprise.

you also are going to wear out the heads on your camera which will needed to be repaired, therefore saving life on your investment if you have a dvx or any prosumer

True. But that's why I use an inexpensive 1 chip camera. I suppose if I needed to log and capture on a daily basis, I would consider an investment in a deck. But, when you need to log and capture every now and again, laying out $ for the deck is just plain wasteful.
