Virgin Media Shorts nominees announced

Virgin Media Shorts has just released their shortlist of 11 films for this years competition. Check out the films at http://www.virginmediashorts.co.uk/shortlist/. A group of industry judges including Kevin Spacey is deciding who wins the main award on the 22nd September but you can vote for your favourite on the website – this will decide the people’s choice award. The cool thing is that anyone who votes could win one of 50 year round cinema passes.

I think Cribble’s animation is possibly my favourite, fantastic visuals and music. I also like Tim Key’s the transaction, cleverly shot and witty. It would be great to hear what people think of the nominees.

Just checke this out. Some very good work there. Watched 'me all, - Mixtape got my vote. Simple story told exceptionally well.

Yeah it's a nice story, I like the music as well. Apparently the young actors were recently in a feature length film.

Anyone else got a favourite?

I'll check them out later.

Have to say that the transaction is a little poor though. Just watched it on your recommendation and was underwhelmed to say the least.

Just how many vignettes of life do people need to see? Not as bad as that butterface or whatever it was that made last years final, but forgettable all the same.

Mixtape was pretty good.

This is not a fly. Pretty good. Predictable but charming.

Grief. Well shot, but awful story. Twist for a twist's sake and without heart or impact. Seen the same "grief" twist in numerous short films.

CGI Bows. Absolutely brilliant for the first minute and a half, tails off after that when the joke goes too far. Fantastically well shot with perfect atmosphere and good acting. Funny as well.

Gunslingers. Absolutely dire. Almost laughably bad.

Hiccup. The kind of whimsical nonsense that seems to do well in these things. Some nice grading. Decent atmosphere. Stick a few random images together and you have a film type of short. It does have a little something though.

Making the difference. Rubbish. Sort of thing you get in student classes up and down the country.

She farted and created the world. Good animation and with good energy. Not particularly original but did whast it did well enough. Can see him getting work in Music Videos.

Smooth Line. Pretty good. Technically not great, but the story kept the attention. Definitely one of the better ones on the short list.

Stalking Ben Chadz. Some nice dialogue couple with solid performances. Didn't realluy go anywhere and was unfulfilling.

Three little words. Very cliched subject material and felt very old from the moment it started. Reasonably well put together, but all been done before.

In conclusion it's a bit of a mixed bag. I like the Virgin Media Shorts competition, but like last year, it seems that the better films tend to lose out to the kind of standard fare that we see elswhere.

I'd plump for CGI Brows as being the standout one but Mixtape is probably the only fully realised concept in the whole short list so should really win.

Hey folks,

Just another reminder, cause time's running out. There are two days left to vote for the People's Choice award in Virgin Media shorts. There's 12 short films on the shortlist, and my favourites aren't anywhere near the top...

"Hiccup" and "She Farted and Created the World" are doing well, among others. Have a look, vote and tell me which ones you liked!

You need to sign up to become a critic and vote, but signing up also enters you into the draw for one of 50 free one-year cinema passes. So it's a pretty good deal.
