Hi fellow DVX+Letus35ers, This is an ad I shot for a friend. would appreciate some comments on the following:

1) the feel and mood of the ad - did it match the 'product' or service
2) the editing and cinematography - any good? room for improvements and where?
3) Music -right choice, wrong choice?

Thanks here it the video posted in my blog http://borgkingkong.blogspot.com

Alright... I'll go first.

First off, I had no idea what the ad was for after watching it. Because of that closing shot, I thought I may have known, but not for sure. We need some text to explain it. Maybe an opening title shot saying "Icklebooks".

I LOVE the music... but I'm not quite sure if it fits this as it should. It definitely has a mood to it, but it sets a bit of a melancholy mood, and I'm not seeing the connection between melancholy and childrens books.

Editing and framing? well, the framing was excellent. From what I could tell, the colors could be cleaned up a bit in post, but that may be the compression. Editing was good... not a whole lot of area's to go wrong on this type of ad as it's just straight cuts, but it did seem to drag on a bit. Maybe trim it down... or better yet, add some title's here and there to explain what exactly we're watching. It'll help break up the repetitiveness of the "same" shots over and over.

I really dig the piece... but for it's purpose, I just think it could serve better with the changes stated.

i generally made the same observations, titles are a must.

with titles, this piece could reflect a lot of different things. if you put a title with a statistic about germs, it could work as a sort of psa, if you put a title about education and icklebooks, it could work for icklebooks.

would you mind dropping the name of that song slash artist?

OK, seems ALOT of feedback is coming back on the titleing and also not sure what the ad is for.. I'll go back in and edit in some text.... I've got to have my head cracking on the what these words should say to make the feel come across..

The music is called Little Star by Stina Nordenstam from the Romeo and Juliet movie soundtrack. Maybe its just the different interpretation of the music, but I thought it sounded to me more towards innocence (hence children bookshop)...

Colour wise, it might be my lack of ability to REALLY get the colour that I want. could be a lack of technical skill cos I know what I want but just seem to put it down (I AM new to this so....). I would have liked it to be more punchy.

but good feedback overall.. I'll get cracking on the text..

Thanks RCbrown on your constructive feedback! Always appreciate the feedback you've provided cos it helps me improve.... I wish I could go to a 'school' somewhere to learn the 'technical' skills for editing so I can put my 'vision' down on film, so to speak.. well maybe in the near future...

I liked it as well. I think that it could have benefited from a little more CC. I would like the colors to pop a little more on this genre when there's kids involved. Anyways, maybe it has something to do with youtube which always seems to degrade the image. Good job though!!!

Not sure what editing program you're using... but I can say that you could make a huge difference by just bringing down your blacks. If you're on FCP, open the 3-way color corrector and bring the black level down. Then play with the saturation a bit... from what I could tell by your description, up the saturation to bring out the colors for the desired effect.

p.s. I checked out Stina Nordenstam and like her a lot. If you're into that type of music, I'd recommend "Azure Ray" also. Their music is really something.

I use FCP, but I didn't quite experiment enough to see which level of colour saturation will look optimal! another learning point to take away I guess...

I';ve only checked out that particular song, but will check out the rest...
