Vimeo, YouTube, Jerky Playback

Hello all!

I can't seem to find any solid answers about this. High quality, HD, pretty much any flash video set to either of those, plays back terribly jerky. Safari and Firefox, newest versions. Fully updated flash player. Makes no difference even if I let it load completely.

I have 4GB of brand new ram in my Pwr PC G5. So that's not the issue. My internet connection is Comcast, no speed problems.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

To the best of my memory, sites that have flash video that they have encoded themselves, seems fine. ( not using a site like youtube or vimeo )

If its not a computer or a Connection problem then its propably a buffering issue, JUST because you have a fast connection, does not factor in internet traffic;

Right click on the video:

Select "Settings"

Under the "Local Storage" tab (the one that looks like a folder icon)

Slide the slider all the way to "Unlimited"

Then close the settings.

Now hit the pause button, let the video load to the end,

Now you should be able to watch without ANY stuttering issues.

Thank you for your quick reply. Unfortunately the problem still persists.

I changed settings in both Firefox and Safari, Repaired Permissions, restarted computer, all with no change.

I'm annoyed at the idea that it might be one of those bugs that pop up when certain versions of different software come together.

Any suggestions are more than welcome. Hope to hear from anyone who is experiencing this also.

The one thing I forgot to mention is I noticed it first in Safari a couple months ago, at first on Vimeo, and then when people here on DVXuser started taking advantage of YouTube's Higher quality option. It wasn't happening with Firefox on Vimeo's HD setting at first, but definitely when YouTube started their HD option.

And this is just nonsense in the back of my head, but I swear flash sites don't run as smoothly now that Adobe produces Flash.

Did you load the entire video to the end or did you stream it?

Can you replicate the effects on another machine?

mine is the only one that isn't an intel. no issues on the other computers, two intel macbooks. one with an flash player 9, not sure on the other, both settings set in the middle. no problems on safari or firefox.

it's just weird that it's only with flash video from community sites like vimeo and youtube, but not all of them.Virb plays fine on both browsers. large flash video files that people host on their own sites are fine.

I'm finding others on other forum sites that are describing the same thing, but no answers.

oh, and yep, let them load all the way.

again, thank you for taking the time to help me figure this out. greatly appreciated!

Judging by what I have been reading, it's a G5 PPC problem. Ridiculous that we are getting left behind already when there is nothing wrong with our machines. Forced obsolescence, sad.

I just realized I made a mistake above, Vimeo HD plays fine in Firefox. But not Safari. Wonder what the difference that Vimeo does compared to YouTube making that playback difference.

It may be that CPU flash players rely up Intel MMX/Optimization opcode for certain video decoding subroutines.

I have an Intel Macbook Pro and found this thread while researching same problem.
I followed the instructions and playback did improve, but still stutters some. When
I enlarged the video to full screen, playback was the same, expected it to slowdown some.

I am seeing the same issue in Safari only, Firefox seems to be ok. It's doing it for ALL Flash video content, and even some flash-heavy sites like BluDomain templates. Content/Video plays at about 8-10 fps, regardless of whether or not it is buffered. Changing Flash Settings to Unlimited storage has no effect.

I am also on a G5 PPC Mac, and this issue cropped up after a Flash Player 10 upgrade from 9 (I think it was 9). Very frustrating, I'm about to try downgrading to see if it helps.

FIXED for my browsers

FIXED for my browsers

The fix for me was to downgrade Flash 10 to Flash 9. You can get the plugin here. Mac users, open the DMG and simply copy the "Flash Player.plugin" and "flashplayer.xpt" to your /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, overwriting the version 10 files. Reload your browser, and hopefully it fixed the issue for you also.

Try Camino

Try Camino

I've had this same problem on two macs that i own. I've never been able to find out why and lots of people obviously don't have this problem or maybe it doesn't bother them :undecided
This one problem is the reason why i switched to Camino as my primary browser. For some reason Vimeo and other flash sites play perfectly smooth on Camino while they are unwatchable on other browsers.

But...but...but...DVDs are dead. Blu-ray is a non-issue. Everyone will just be watching movies online. Right? That's what we've been told.

What's the processor speed on your Mac? 4GB ram doesn't mean as much as the processor speed. My 1GHz machine was like that, but my new iMac with 2.66GHz processor rocks.
