Vimeo Issues

I finally joined the VIMEO revolution after years in Youtubeopia.
Youtube doesn't have restrictions yet Vimeo restricts to 5000 kbps yet produces better video?
- does anyone have any tips to making the video look good?

It's pretty straight forward. I use FCP Compressor to create large web format reference movie from my QT master file. Upload and you're done. Suggest you might consider paying for Vimeo Plus if you're going to be unloading a lot of videos.

Cheers mate,
Took your advice and went for the plus.
So do you select the 1080p option or leave it as 720p?
It says something about taxing the viewer's computer if one selects 1080p.

I nearly always upload at 1080, usually with a bitrate of 8500-10,000. Do some tests for yourself.

Perhaps playability and viewer preference depends on your audience and their computers/connections/screen size. But give it time to partially load and it will play smooth.
I don't believe Vimeo restricts the bitrate, they just recommend 5000 (unless that's a restriction of free accounts- I have Pro).

That's the one clear advantage I see to YT, the viewer can select 720 or 1080.

*** But those of you who do upload at 720, why? Quicker playback, smaller file sizes, or what??? I've been wondering about this for a while...

I have plus. A warning comes up about placing enormous stress on the viewer's computer. I guess I'll try uploading the big bitrate one to see how it plays back. Everytime I've watched a Vimeo video, I've always had to wait for it to buffer before playing - I thought maybe that could be avoided if I adhered to their guidelines. I'll take your advice though and test. We shall see.
Cheers

I see Vimeo also defaults to 720 even if you upload 1080p. Do you leave it at 720 or select 1080p?

Go to Settings> Video File> Display this video in 1080p. Then it might take a while longer to show up on their end.

As far as testing bitrates, maybe try 5000, 7000, 8500 and 10,000. See what you think? I used to do 8500, but started going higher a while back.
Try it on a short :10-:15 second sequence (for time's sake), and maybe try it on something with movement or fine detail.

Edit- I prefer 2 pass VBR too.

Cheers, I know how to select 1080p. I'm just wondering what the most prevalent practice is. Does everyone select 1080p now? Do you? Or do people just leave it on 720p?

Oh sorry!

Good question- I always upload 1080. So whenever I see someone upload a 720 file that was shot at 1080, I wonder why?
If anybody chimes in here, I'd like to know why.

But if I made a real rough guess, I'd say 3 out of 4 are at 1080? Or maybe 3 out of 5?
