Vimeo - how the effing eff do you mute that sucker?

OK, I must be a moron. I can't figure out how to mute vimeo videos. For youtube you have that nifty speaker you can click on to mute the audio, but in vimeo you have volume bars and no matter what I do, I randomly either mute it or not; sometimes I can click twice on the first bar and it'll mute - other times I click on the first bar and can get it to go completely gray (no color) which should - in my mind - indicate "mute", but the sound is still there at low volume. Drives me crazy.

Now, I assume that it's just me being stupid, not that you can't actually mute vimeo videos reliably, because that would be too crazy, like a car with no brakes - no responsible company would release such a car and no responsible site would provision videos in such a way that you can't mute the sound. And even if I'm stupid, it's not exactly a user interface success that it's so hard to find the mute function - I have no problem on youtube, I should have no problem finding it on vimeo... but nooooo.

So what's the trick to reliably mute vimeo videos?

That's a pretty standard UI design for turning down audio.

Standard? That's actually very interesting - can you give me a link to a site where that's the case? In every case I've seen, there is a graphic element that you can actually grab with your mouse and move, not just the bars themselves, with nothing indicating that you are supposed to grab randomly anywhere across the bars... I've never seen such a thing. In this case there is no visual cue for the user. For example in OS X and in Windows, there are always cues to show you what to move and how - a control ought to indicate visually how to operate it - a knob turns, a slider slides, etc. - in the case of vimeo there is no such indication.
