Vimeo compression have changed. Please help change it back.

curious how anyone who has been a heavy user of vimeo/youtube/etc... has made the move to another platform like vzaar?

Have you tried to change over all backlinks to the new site? do you try and break all connections to the 'old' host?

And by heavy user, i mean more than 100 videos, lots of links around the web, embedded on sites, etc...

My total warehouse of in-progress-awaiting-client-review, and final client pieces is 62 for the past 12-months. Many of those are multiple stages of the same piece, but I usually keep them in the pool for comparisons until the piece is completed.

When it's client-viewing links it doesn't matter where the file is hosted really. So one could even throw up a WIX page with password-protected videos from VZAAR in a matter of minutes.

It is now virtually as easy to use Vzaar and just embed the link on one of my websites for viewing by clients or some particular targeted audience.

You just miss out on the world randomly stumbling across your videos like they can with YouTube or Vimeo. So for my Vimeo uploads I'm going to start putting the text: "Click the 'HD' button and select 720p or 1080p to see what this piece REALLY looks like." right at the beginning of each description.
Vimeo created this situation so it's fair to put the blame on them that way.

But ALL THEY NEED TO DO is just simply bring BACK the one function that let's the content owner select a default playback quality.

And BUFFERING. My vimeo watching experience has absolutely gotten worse since they got rid of buffering.

Just a quick update, this is the latest update about this matter, at the moment there is no fix/change. they're still "evaluating" the situation.

- basically you can't buffer videos, but they told me on a post they're working on it (?)...

- You can't default to HD, because they say, now you have multiple formats so it's too complicated to control the system manually or something.

Honestly, I don't understand what they're saying, but I'm trying to... feel free to post more comments on this Vimeo thread (this is the latest one you should use) :

There is some sort of progress, as now they're at least willing to talk about it and also admitting that they are considering changes, BUT, if more people will actually post on that thread it will greatly help, if not this will thing will just slip and will be the death of Vimeo and at the moment there hardly any alternatives.

This is really disappointing. The whole point of Vimeo over YouTube was that it wouldn't default to some crappy low res version and then auto play the next video. Now Vimeo does both! All they need are the horrible racist comments under each video and the transition will be complete!
I just turned off the auto renewal on my plus account. It's set to renew in April, so I'll decide then if I want to keep giving them my money. I'm kind of thinking not to, unless they change a few things back.

posted in that thread.

also replied to a staff member's comment who states that they would 1:1 answer all emails about this subject, which they did not when I wrote them 2 weeks ago.

....I just turned off the auto renewal on my plus account...

I did that a while ago - when this first emerged. Luckily, I've got a few months before I decide if I want to renew my membership. It's just Plus so not exactly a lot of money... but on the basis of what we've seen so far Vimeo won't be getting any more of my money unless things improve.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to give people an update:

it seems like they just improve the buffering on their system, so up until a week ago or so I couldn't buffer videos more then 5sec, now I can buffer more segments ,so about 20 seconds or so, it still not enough, as you can't leave the video to fully buffer then watch it, but its an improvement and it's one that Darnell told me they're going to make which is good, because it means they're changing things and trying to listen after all.

I also want to say that Vimeo still for me is a way better option then Youtube, and this is why people should contact them and demand a change. benefits over Youtube:

- Cleaner interface
- Better looking videos while on the right resolution (watching a 4K video on Vimeo is very different experience then watching it on Youtube)
- easily customisable embed and player
- fairly responsive customer service as opposed to non existent one...

Keep on contacting them, and explain what you want, if you don't say what you want they won't know :-)

It was probably a loophole they did not want generally known. Know people are talking about it they will stop it.

If you don't know what the deal is, the deal is about money. By forcing everyone to adaptive resolution they can save A LOT of bandwidth/transfer which = money. Maybe they have slight financial problems or they want to keep current pricing what means doing cuts.

All well and good, except when you pay $200/year for the service.

Yeah, I know :/ I'm not happy at this as well, I'm just saying what their reasoning can be. I'm not buying this "pushing things forward/looking into the future" reason they are giving.
