I'm about to purchase the panasonic anamorphic adapter for my dvx100a. I'm wondering if it will be possible for me to view "un-squeezed" footage on set using a professional sony fineld monitor that has a 16:9 button. Will this work? Or do i need an actual 16:9 monitor?

thanks

Really?!?! THAT'S FREAKING AWESOME!

Re: viewing image with 16:9 adapter on set

As long as it squishes your picture into a 16:9 frame, it doesn't matter how it does it. You'll just be looking at what seems to be letterboxed footage, that's all. But the picture will *be* the 16:9 anamorphic footage squashed inside the letterboxed bars :)

Cool. I'm going to test it out this weekened. If this works, then I won't have to pay $$$ for the century eyepiece adapter.

Re: viewing image with 16:9 adapter on set

It should work with the "squeeze" setting too, I assume.

Re: viewing image with 16:9 adapter on set

Yes. Squeeze mode footage can be treated exactly the same as anamorphic footage - the anamorphic footage will be sharper, but they're the same aspect ratio.

Re: viewing image with 16:9 adapter on set

..not to be technically corrective here, but just for the sake of knowledge, the image will be a true letterbox image.  letterboxing is the act of taking a wider image than will fit on a 4:3 tv, and shrinking it proportionally until its width fits inside the 4:3 dimensions.. this leaves black at the top and bottom.    just like all DVD players do to a widescreen DVD when they are played on a 4:3 tv and the 4:3 Letterbox display mode is selected . it letterboxes the widescreen image into the center of the 4:3 screen.

the DVX "letterbox" mode is not true letterboxing.. it only masks the top and bottom of the image with black leaving a 16:9 image in the center to make the image appear to have been letterboxed from orignal footage which was shot in 16:9.. when in fact its only masked.   it would be true letterboxing if you had the anamorphic lense on, and you could switch it to letterbox mode, and it would letterbox that full width 16:9 image into the center of the 4:3 frame. ;)

Re: viewing image with 16:9 adapter on set

Point of clarification: DVD players don't just add black bars, they'll actually digitally squeeze the image down and then fit the black bars over the empty space. They don't just mask portions of the video, they actually resample (like resizing a photo in PhotoShop). I know IAL knows that, but I'm just clarifying it for anyone else reading this who may not have understood it.

Re: viewing image with 16:9 adapter on set

i have one of the sony professionaly monitors with the 16:9 switch and it works great.

it works with both the anamorphic adaptor and the internal squeeze mode.
