Viewing HVX footage HD SD television

Ok I have a question. We shoot our hd material, however we dont really get the benefit of viewing hd material the way it should be viewed. Meaning most of us burn our footage to sd dvds. And viewing it on a a hd tv the image looks grainy and pixelated. Its sometimes hard for me to watch it on a LCD tv. Most of the time I watch it on a regular sd tv since it looks better. My question is this, is watching our footage on a sd tv misleading? Since everything is going hd, do we have to wait until Blue Ray becomes more available to watch hvx footage the right way?

Say you have an important client. Would you show your footage on a sd tv or hd television?

:) I depends how did you burn your dvd,i mean how did you render it out?You should have done high compression.dvcpro50 will give more brilliant picture on sd screening...

Some use the Sony Playstation3 for HD presentation, also the AppleTV puts out HD signals...
If you want to show HD stuff to clients, you could also get the Blackmagic Intensity for your editsation and go via HDMI to a large HD screen or HD beamer...

Standard DVDs are MPEG-2. You can't make a DVCPRO 50 DVD.

Now, you can put data files on a data DVD and play it some other way, but no standard DVD player will play it. (To say nothing of only being able to fit 8 minutes of DVCPRO 50 on a DVD-5.)

Using the HD settings in Windows Media 9 (wmv. files) can work well for showing HD quality material to clients with PC's. Otherwise DVD might be what most typical clients would think of viewing.

What's really going to be the crucial deciding factor in what format you choose to preview or show finished work in, is what the final format and specs are for your project's delivery. If your clients want to see HD, then by all means render out to HD .wmv or HD .mov files and watch HD playback of the footage on a computer monitor or a Playstation 3 or XBOX 360 connected to an HDTV. Both the PS3 or XBOX 360 will play HD wmv. files from USB flash drives.

Rendering footage to HD Windows Media at high resolutions and bitrates is essentially very close to rendering to Blu-ray as far as viewing quality HD video for playback.

Otherwise, typically most clients may care to see the content of the video you produce moreso than the highest resolution it can be displayed in, and may be fine with viewing a DVD. A properly encoded DVD of progressively shot video should look fine on an HDTV or computer LCD screen -- not as resolved as HD, but still can look better than on an SD TV.

If your SD dvds are looking bad on your LCD/Plasma I would examine your burning and how you have your TV set up. Of all the correctly set up HDTV's I have ever seen DVDs look brilliant on them. Not HD f course but nowhere close to "unwatchable."
