Viewing Films Alone

Don't you hate it when you're watching a film and the friend sitting next to you says, "I know I've seen him in...what's that film...it was with that..."

I know I prefer to watch films either alone at home or with no one I know in a theater. A lot of people may consider this anti-social.

You wouldn't silently read a novel together with an adult, would you?

I think that removing anonymity while viewing a film can hinder emotional responses.

Just some thoughts. I'm curious what others think. Pass the popcorn, please.

I enjoy going to movies with friends.

Of course, my friends know how to behave in a theater.

Some people view going to a movie as primarily a social experience, in the sense that it is a shared experience.

I like watching movies alone, but doesn't really matter as long as people aren't talking.

I know a lot of people on here won't go to theaters because of crowds misbehaving and people being idiots, but I usually don't expierence that. Last Saturday I went to a matinee to see the Watchmen and for those that have seen it, the scene where Dr. Manhattan is being ambushed by the media and freaks and takes off to Mars, it goes from crazy loud to nothing....anyways, once that happened, there was this really cool moment in the theater where you could literally hear a pin drop it was so quiet, it was so cool, 500+ people being absolutely silent for like 5 seconds.....nothing......it added so much just to that part....you just don't get that watching a movie at home.

Having someone talking while I watch a movie is the most anoing thing for me.

Questions like: "why did he did that?" or "thats unrealistic - no one would do that" drive me mad.

So yes. I´m a lonley film man.

I go solo almost everytime I go to the movies. Unless my wife wants to see it. But usually I go thursday midnite shows. Usually filled with nerds and geeks (my self included-in some respects) and they know how to act.

If it's a comedy I'll try to go on opening Friday night. There's nothing better than seeing a good comedy with a responsive crowd. Otherwise, matinees during the week. I'm usually alone, unless it's something the wife wants to see and we can find a babysitter.

For this reason alone the movie going experience is still strong. They thought the TV in the 50's would kill it. Nope. They thought cable would destroy it. Fat chance. Now, mail order DVDs of movies that were out just a couple of months ago, sometimes just weeks ago can't even slay the mighty 'going out to the movies' experience. It is still alive and well because of that irreplaceable audience vibe.

Very well put Rick.

I watch movies at home alone all the time. But in a theatre, I prefer to go with my wife, or someone else who has similar tastes and understanding of the medium.

My girlfriend prides herself on a vast knowledge of useless trivia and the ability to recognize an actor from the background of a movie she saw years before. And she has the attention span of a goldfish. So there are types of movies I'll watch with her and types that are more for myself.

and understanding of the medium.

This, not so much. Not a complaint, though. She can behave when needed.
