Viewfinder versus monitor

We shot the first project with the DVX100 today, and had some issues. The biggest one is that we exposed to eye with the viewfinder and lcd screen and it looks at least a stop brighter on the tv as I review it.

Any recommendations on overcoming this issue? There was one shot that we messed up (video peaked out in one area) because we didn't have zebras turned on, but the rest were fine, just a bit brighter than I would have liked.

Do I really have to work with a gray card on every shot? That seems excessive. I don't have a field monitor.

Yes, a properly calibrated field monitor is the best solution on critical shoots - but I understand that isn't always practical or possible. Over time I think you'll become accustomed to knowing how your LCD images will look on a monitor later (kinda like the film guys knowing how their images will look with a particular stock). And by all means use the zebra stripes - at a minimum set to 100 IRE.

Try calibrating your monitor and your LCD using the DVX's color bars. It's entirely possible that they're not calibrated to each other yet.
