Hey welcome to the board Dave . . . another Maltese member makes Malta the officialy highest DVX per square Kilometre country on the board 4 members to 246km . . . hehe. I dono if there is like a specific add-on for framing in the VF, but will have a look (browse) . . . I just wanted to say hi online first ;D
hook your camera upto a NLE, and playback some footage that you've masked to 2.35:1. Open the lcd screen and just tape off the black areas, then you have a pretty acurate frame.
Duno, how to go about doing the viewfinder though...
Thanks blazingoat. I am aware of going about masking the lcd screen, but I kind of prefer shooting through the viewfinder. It makes me feel more "one" with the camera. ;D Cheers
Take a sheet of thin transparant plastic. Draw two (thick) lines with an alcohol pen on the plastic piece at a distance which matches the 16:9 height on yr viewfinder. Cut the plastic sheet in the correct dimensions so that it gets slightly squeezed in the viefinder frame when mounted against the viewfinder LCD.
Thanks andre. I'm not really sure how to mount the plastic against the viewfinder lcd. Do I have to open up the viewfinder (unscrew the parts) to reach the lcd, which is at the bottom?
I do not own a DVX, but normally there is some kind of small cavity between the viewfinder LCD unit and de bezel. If you can make the plastic piece a touch too big it should squize itself into place.
I think there is some miscommunication' goin on. Dave is asking how to mask off his viewfinder, not his LCD. To mask off the viewfinder is not as easy as masking off the LCD. I might suggest that you consider making your mask with a sheet of acetate and use a technical artists pen (kohinoor #000) to make your lines. I expect much trial and error. BTW - the American Cinematographers manual has detailed drawing of the formats.
Yes Bill I am after masking the viewfinder not the lcd. My problem is how to reach the viewfinder lcd inside the viewfinder "turret" so to say. Should I try to dismantle the viewfinder to reach the viewfinder lcd, so I can attatch a piece of acetate with the drawn lines? Anyone tried this before?
I for one, would not disassemble anything, because if you screw it up, it means a trip to the Panasonic man. You just might want to put the acetate just under the rubber eyepiece.
However FWIW, I don't use either the LCD or viewfinder. I use an outboard monitor (Nebtek) mounted on an Israeli arm. Because I don't need to hug the cam, I can see much better in context and frame more accurately.
