Videomaker review of DVX100A

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

yeah I read the article as well, they seemed to like it although when they say some controls are poorly placed as a weakness I have a hard time understanding that one as virtully all of the controls are buttons insted of menus. But anyway seems a little late for a review ???

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

i dunno...something about videomaker mag that makes it seem too consumerish...

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

I've been subscribing for about 9 years and I haven't totally outgrown it. It IS consumerish - as in hobbiest. But in the course of a given year, they cover really good stuff on lighting, sound, NLE's, shooting techniques, etc. Even with nine years of the same stuff over and over, I'm always catching a new tip or idea. Consider me an remedial student of video.

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

If that is what you call a review, I am Steven Spielberg. There was absolutely nothing anyone serious about videography could use in any way, shape or form to make an informed decision on the DVX. Garbage! I agree with a former post, there are "occasionally" some articles worth while in Videomaker for this group of videographers but I am really wondering whether I will renew my subscription in December.

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

I subscribe as well because there just isn't too many DV mags out there. It was nice to see it on the cover but the article didn't have much meat to it at all.

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

i buy that mag just because sometimes they have cool ads for cool gear :)

That's what makes it hard for me to buy it :) Gotta stay away from cool gear, need to eat instead.

I didn't want to say it in my post above, but I find the ads (and announcements of new gear) more appealing than the articles.

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

yeah me too.. Im not asshamed to admit it. Even the BH adds are 4 pages long and have all sorts of cool stuff.

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

You can spend a long time in those B & H ads. A magnifying glass would help. I hate it when they don't include prices, though.

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

What mag would you guys consider the best for technical info and reviews for the low-budget non-amateur videomaker?

DV mag, no doubt about it. Technical enough so as not to seem insulting, but they break things down enough not to be intimidating. And Chris & Trish write AE tutorials every month or two for the magazine... that alone, in my opinion, makes it particularly valuable.

PLUS, if you're working in television (as I am), they'll give you a free subscription. It's definately worth looking into... or at least stretching the truth about what you do!

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

I 2nd the motion for DV Magazine. Also, check out Videography, which lately has had a lot of coverage on DV "filmmaking" gear and technique (and also offers free subscriptons to film/video pros)...

American Cinematographer is also a good read, but no freebies there...(unless maybe you get inducted into the ASC)

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

How about a web site link for DV Magazine or Videography - to find out how to subscribe.

Re: Videomaker review of DVX100A

I've read Videomaker mag for many years and found the articles to very informative even though I already know a lot of what they write about. I mean, how many different ways can you cover 3 point lighting or capturing sound but they have some interesting ways to looks at it. I think the writers are fairly good for the most part and there are a lot of things to read in the mag.
I remember subscribing to computer mag a while ago and it kept getting smaller article wise and larger add wise so it keep this in mind when commenting on magazines.
They have to try to find the positive things to comment on concerning their reviews even if the item isn't the greatest. Kind of politically correct.
