I have been looking for information on camcorders that when used at night looking up at the night sky can see the stars.
Has anyone got any ideas what camcorder is capable?
Thanks, Rob

Hey
I havent tried it but your best bet is to go out in the country away from city lights where your eyes can see a whole lot more stars and maybe your cam will too.

I actually live in an area like that. I can see all the stars here perfectly. I hav tried using the new sony super HAD EXVIEW CCD which is .005 LUX in color. I have only found .00001 lux in black and white from TI.

Not sure if exposure is possible in camcorders to that degree.

I asked my friend who works at an editing studio about that and he told me that the editors usually add the stars in at the directors behest...

yes. stars are added in post usually.
you'd be probably able to get on CCD only the brightest spots (=planets) and the moon. but the results are not exciting. better add a fake bigger moon in post.

lately i've noticed the how badly done was the BG sky in the final scenes of 'Alpha Dog'.. i wouldnt say that film was great for special effects. also the muzzle flash of gunshots was like a scifi videgame..

If the camera is capable of it, you can set a longer shutter speed. For instance, the DVX lets you use shutter speeds down to a quarter second.

You can also hook cameras up to telescopes, although I don't know the mechanical details. Telescopes let you see more stars because they gather more light, and they will have that same effect on a camera.
