Video to ipod?

Ok so we have by now all seen the firestore and other similar HD devices. Is it possible to record directly to an ipod, maybe someone here with more tech skills than i could create a pod application allowing the camera to connect via firewire and dump data to the cheapest source of portable media...

But more seriously is the ipod fast enough when connected to a mac to capture HD direct via FCP?

best regards

Mike, there are a number of quite detailed threads looking at using the ipod as an offload device but no way to record directly. search hvx ipod and I am sure you will find plenty of information.

I've read somewhere that the iPod hard drives can't cope with the thru' put of video very well causing high failure rates.

Using it as a capture device wont work, i mean itll work but drop frames a ton. Using it as a P2 card wont work.

Out in the field the other day, i used the iPod as an extra HD which came in handy to save space on the laptop HD. The macbook pro 5400rpm drive worked perfectly capturing 1080p footage, over 10 minutes at a time, no dropped frames. At lunch when we had about 30 gigs of footage, i just dumped all that to the iPod and then verified the files , took about a half hour, then deleted them off the laptop.

Playing the files back off of the ipod resulted in terrible playback perfromance, but once i got home i dumped them to a firewire drive and they are all in perfect shape.

Yeah, IPODS cannot take 100mb a second very well. Especially when one min of video = a gig. I have a 60gig video Ipod and that thing would fry under pressure.... Plus IPODs cost more then regular hard-drives anyhow. I think the whole idea of Ipod as storage is just ridiculous... even if you could... would you?

Again, this is NOT a cheap or smart solution. You can get a battery powered portable HDD that is 100GB for under $150. A 60gb ipod video is more than double that. Ipods are made to load up, occasionally update/sync and play files from cache, they are NOT meant to be hard drives! They are not cooled properly, they are not fast enough and the battery will not last long enough. The failure rate of iPods that are heavily used as storage devices is far greater than those used for music/video playback, just ask around.

Bottom line is that while POSSIBLE, it is a bad and expensive idea.

Yes HDV today but what does the future hold?
I look at my iPod and all its features and weigh those against the purchase price, that's just how I think.
The iPod is smaller than any other 'drive' that I have seen and for me size does matter, especially when you shoot a single shot movie 86 minutes in length that follows our main character in and out of a car four times and in and out of four locations. That Firestore worked great but given the choice I would loved to have had something smaller.

If I CAN, which means it works, I will and in the meantime my iPod will give me every penny of its purchase price in SpongeBob episodes, pix of the family and music, AHHH sweet music.

If I already own the iPod and I want to use it like Cynic821 did, isn't that cheaper than buying a $150 hard drive?

Not in the long run... breaking your $400 ipod is more expensive than buying an external drive... you can get an 80gb external that is battery powered for $99 now.

The IPOD would be interesting IF no FCP or any software is utilized and NO P2 is utilized. Only then, it will be interesting. And now it seems that it cannot capture anything even with FCP.

AshG,

Could you pass along the brand and model of these battery powered HD's?

Thanks!

Mwave sells them and Barry has talked about them quite a bit...

Depends upon p2 card size I believe. Each card makes a partition so 8gb cards would utilise a 120gb drive with 15 partitions. 16gb cards will fill 240gb etc.

That is only for firewire offloading... I have only used 4GB cards but it was my understanding that for an 8GB card it creates two 4GB partitions...
