Video tears in Vegas.. need faster video card?

Vegas is reporting 23.976fps playback of cineform transcoded HMC files.. However, I'm seeing quite a bit of video-tear and it does feel like what I'm seeing on the screen is a bit more sluggish than 23.976.

I'm running Nvidia 8600GT.. I have no idea if this card is fast enough for HD video playback... but I would think HD video playback should be pretty trivial for such a card.. do I need to upgrade my video card?

If my video card is indeed not able to keep up with the HD playback in vegas, shouldn't vegas report slower playback speed?

Yes.. the CPU is pushing 23.976 fps but it's still dependent on the Video card to push the HD-sized preview window at 23.976 fps... At least, that's what I think..

video tear , screen tearing.. all same thing.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_tearing

And no, I don't agree, at some level, the performance of the video card DOES come into play. Slap a generic VGA driver on your machine and see how the video plays back... It'll playback really crappy.

That said, I kind of doubt my 8600GT's video acceleration performance is too slow to playback 720P content at preview quality without tearing..

Still strange though to see the tearing because it wasn't there when I edit SD content..

No booggerg the video card does not come into play with vegas's performance. In NLE's like Adobe Premiere that takes advantage of Open GL yes but not in Vegas.

Okay if you guys have some 720P content form the HMC loaded.. if you have a shot where you do a mdoerate pan, and if there's a vertical edge in the frame that pans across the screen, do you see it move across smoothly, or do you see small "tears" in the vertical edge? almost as if the video card drawing the vertical line can't keep up with the speed of the pan?

Ian, I'm not talking about OpenGL acceleration, since that only applies to transformation and 3D effects, I'm referring to the video acceleration of the video card.

Vegas doesn't use any kind of video card acceleration, it is all CPU based decoding. Other NLEs use the video card for acceleration, but Vegas does not. If it were using the video card in any way you wouldn't have the video tearing.

It must use the videocard for acceleration of the rendering of video previews.. heck quicktime player WMPlayer all uses the 2D chip on the video card for video acceleration.. I'm not talking about using the GPU for acceleration.. I know that is not support in Vegas.. I'm talking about a low-level hardware thing that is common across all video cards.. I'm talking about the raw pixel fill rate of the card.. perhaps my 8600GT is not up to par?

The video card absolutely has no effect on playback performance. This is a great asset to many as you can install install Vegas on almost any PC and it will run, even laptops with shared integrated memory.

Besides, your card is fast enough for what you are talking about. I would strongly guess the problem lies elsewhere.

WIlliams: I suspect so as well.. 2D pixel fill rate is something they've probably maxed out a decade ago..

Perhaps I'm just super sensitive to video tears?

It could be anything,
you have not provided enough information for us to go on.

What is the exact configuration of your system?

How much ram do you have?
Do you have display turned down in preview?

Are you using blend mode in your settings instead of interpolate?

Need more info to help you..
