A client sent me some miniDV tapes (most clients send video in on Beta), so I brought in my Panny to use as a player. Every tape I play that he gave me stutters when I play them. I cleaned my heads and it still stutters. I tried some tapes of mine and they play smoothly.

Is there a setting I'm missing or is it just bad tapes on his end?

What did they shoot on? Some cheaper sony cameras have problems playing in other players but themselves, in which case you might need to use the camera it was shot on to playback the tapes. You could rent or you may already have a beefier DV deck and try that. I'd be scared to play other people's tapes in my own DVX. That's why I have 2 decks. One (DSR-11) for only my tapes (Sony) and one (JVC miniDV/SVHS) deck for everything else (Panasonic, Maxell, JVC, TDK). I never play stuff off the dvx unless i'm reviewing my own footage.

I think they shot it on some DVCams or Beta Cams and transferred it to miniDV. From the video I can see they aren't using miniDV cameras, they are broadcast cams.

I bet you're right about it just being recorded on another device.
