Red button uses the "stills" settings; if camera is set on P, for example, video is as specified in the 2nd video item of the menu with the video camera icon. If camera is set on the wheel camera icon, then the red button and the shutter button do the same thing.
An advantage of the red button, with the wheel on iA, P, A, or S, is that when video is being captured, the shutter button takes a stills photo.
