Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Hello all,

Here's my video production (non-drama) reel that I just finished editing. It's a rough cut and I would like any suggestions or comments from you guys to make it better before sending it out to companies. Everyone helped me a lot for improving my drama reel so I hope people can help me here.

It's 1min and 2 seconds.

Cheers,

Norm

If you haven't seen it yet, here'e my drama reel - http://www.q-films.com/clips/demoreel.mov

Tight - great mix of content. I think we need to think about adding more cheerleader footage. Those are college girls, right? ;)

You've got some really great clips in there and I think it flows well - love the audio track you chose. Are you an editor for hire?

SICK!!!!! It's Awsome! Would not change a thing. Except would love to see more of the 1st shot of the city.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

I thought it was awesome norm,
It flowed seemlessly, and was very entertaning.
If you can, I would make it longer...

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

I think the length is perfect. People's lives/jobs can be busy. I have a really good idea what you're capable of from that. Good stuff man.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Oh!

Thanks for the comments :)

Yeah, I heard that the best way to show a reel is like to go to a luxury restaurant. They give you a small plate that is only 1/10 the portion you get at Swiss Chalet but very tasty and a teaser so you want more. Never feed until full. Make them feel like it's JUST enough but not enough! lol I guess if someone said they want to see more, that means it's a pretty good length! :)

P.S> Actually, they are highschool girls! Some are university!

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Norm, here's a couple of thoughts.

Overall I thought it was excellent but there are some clips I would change out...

1. The slow motion on the RC cars, there is way too much frame blending going on...I find it distracting.

2. Your shots get kind of repetitive at the end...seems like you were going to another theme with the dump and the wedding and then you go back to the dancers again. The implication for me is that you ran out of footage....

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Great work, as usual.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

disjecta,

I agree on the return to footage already shown, but think the R/C car footage / effects promotes his capabilities for post-production tweaking.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

You're totally right. It does look like I ran out of footage.

Actually, I did not want to go back to the breakdance stuff again. However, this was my problem... I wanted to end the reel with more impact.. with some footage that can shoot out or have some power. Breakdancing has spin motion or whatever but I can't seem to find anything else that I have (I have lots of other footage) to end it with. I think the ending for my drama reel ends just right with the guy's face pounding to the floor and then cut to black but I couldn't find anything from my video production stuff to give the same effect.

Also, the music started to get repetitive and wasn't ending or building up and it was an akward place to end but again, I didn't want to add too much more footage. The music started to build up around 1min14 seconds and then the build up is about 10 seconds.. and I don't know, it was one of those times where I kind of got stuck.

Any suggestions?

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Well basically we are talking about 3 shots you need to reorder or replace:

1. at 53:00, Cheerleaders and Break dancers
2. Final shot of break dancer.

I think you could possibly do something with that shot of all the birds at the dump, maybe do a speed ramp to add power to the shot.

Also, the crane shot of the little harbor area, didn't you use that in your other reel? It doesn't matter, I was just curious. I have to say it seems a little bit odd in the midst of the other shots...I mean, you've got little themes going on with pairing shots of break dancers and cheerleaders and the grouping of wedding shots and the crane shot seems to stand out there by itself...

Anyway, I could pick this to pieces but that's not my intention here. I'm usually prompted to respond to these kinds of things when I have a gut feeling.... and the things I have mentioned are apparent to me as an interruption in the flow.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Norm,

I love the rich colors in many of your shots. How much of your demo reel was shot with the DVX100?

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Thanks!

This particular demo was shots mixed from Canon GL1, XL1,and DVX100. :)

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Norm, who did your website? And what was used to do it? thanks. demo looks good, too bad you're in canada.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

I like it.
I used to race R/C cars, but that was before I really started doing video so I don't have too much race footage. The slow-mo of the blue and green car in the headon coming down the straight is really hot. I always love getting a money shot like that.

The other comments that people have been saying, especially the stuff about not repeating footage at the end, I agree.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

I thought it rocked and was very strong. Your website is the heat too man. Good luck.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Nice work Norm, but if I may...the cheerleaders seem out of place, and at 00:51, you might want to hang on just long enough to be able to read the hosts name...it looks a little too cut short.

Nice work. My thoughts.

... and DSR-350 no? (for the garbage stuff?)

I *really* like that shot of Quidi Vidi harbour, or whatever that is.

Off-topic... your drama reel is kick ass... lots of moving camera. Very nice.

Re: Video Production Demo Reel (New)

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the DSR-570.

Are you from St. John's? That is close to Quidi Vidi. It's just in the Quidi Vidi Gut abot 30 seconds away from the actual lake.
