HELP! My dvx100 is not sending a signal thru firewire!!!
I have bought new cables.
I have checked to make sure the "dv out" is on.
Still nothing. I have a project to capture that is due in two days.

Most likely you fried the firewire output of the camera. When you hook it up to the computer, both have to be off, I even put on the battery or hook up the power supply to the camera after I plugged the firewire cable at both ends. You need to send the camera to a service centre for a fix.

yup
Seems to be a common thing. Mine has been fried for about four months, but I can not send it away, driving me nuts. There needs to be a much bigger warning in the manual over this in my opinion.

..you guys should buy a little deck cam. 300.00 for a little camcorder and you dont have to worry about your DVX heads from VTR use or stuff like this again. plus ..well , you have a little camcorder taht you can doo all the thigns you wouldnt do with your DVX with.. firewire burnout doesnt sound like fun. Jan has warned about it in the past, but unfortunately most people dont take the warning seriously simply because it hasnt happend to them or someone they know yet and everyone thinks they are invinceable. its a rare ability found among people to actually learn from others mistakes and misfortune.. which is again unfortunate. and your certainly right, if its not already in the manual.. it should be. i havent looked for it in there ever.

Is it just me or does this seem to happen to mac users much more frequently than PC. What is up with that? BTW, I am not trying to open up a mac/pc debate, just asking a question.

well that destroys my weekend. but thank you for the info. i thought that it might be a fried output, but did not want to consider it. i have not read that anywhere about the "frying" of the firewire output, in the manual or in a post. thanks

ebe - It does seem to be a common problem though I don't ever remember reading any warnings in the manual.
If it is for sure burned out and not covered by warrenty you'd be better off buying a cheap "palm-type" DV camcorder off eBay to use as you deck. That's what most of the guys/gals around here do. I use a Canon Elura40 as my "deck". Works great, no head wear on my $3K camera. Picked up the Elura off ebay for $175!!!

I believe someone clarified that it is definitely more prone to happen to Mac users; something about a ground loop. I've seen this question posted repeatedly from Mac users, but I don't know if it happens to PC users. I know I've hot-plugged the camera to the PC dozens and dozens (if not hundreds) of times, and never fried either the camera's or computer's firewire ports. Firewire, as a design specification, is supposed to be hot-pluggable.

But there's no denying that there have been many reports from Mac users of fried firewire ports, and the official advice from Panasonic is to turn the camera off (and, preferably, the computer off as well) before connecting the camera to the computer via firewire.

Near as I can tell, it's a Mac-only thing.

Thanks Barry, and everyone else who spoke on this issue. I will now look for a cheap deck and send my camera off to be repaired. Thank goodness I got that 4yr warrenty.

How do I know if I have this problem?....I can view live video via firewire on my computer, when I hit the play button(to play and capture a tape) I get an electrical shock sound and no video out to the computer...I can't capture my tapes now. I've been doing the same routine for a long time now when capturing with no problems. HELP!!

as Barry said, I always connected the firewire cable with everything on (PC) without problems. If you can view your camera image in computer, your firewire connector should be fine. Try another computer :)
