We're thinking about buying a couple of cams for various online TV productions. Is there a big difference between the video quality of the EOS 60D and lets say the Panasonic HC-X900M or the Canon HF G10?
I would not buy a 60D at this time, unless you get a good used deal somewhere. The 70D is practically right around the corner and will undoubtedly contain the video enhancements that Canon added to the 5D.
If you decide to get the 60D, which is a fabulous still camera, watch out for crawling colored moire on shingled roofs, brickwork and patterned fabrics.
And if you decide to get the X900M or the G10, both of which are fabulous small sensor camcorders, please be aware that you will have limited ability to create the 'cinematic' shallow depth of field look produced by large sensor cameras like the 60D.
Gary may be right, though, if the 70D is indeed just around the corner and solves the moire problem (as the 5DMarkIII did), it will be the best answer.
But if there is no 70D -- or if there is and it doesn't solve the moire problem -- or if you can't wait, you will either; a) have to live with the 60D's moire, b) settle for 'TVish' deep depth of field with a small sensor camcorder, or c) find another large sensor, low-moire camera (e.g., $16K C300, $10K FS700 (available June), $5K FS100, $4K AF100, $3.5K 5DMkIII or $1K GH2).
I recommend you pick the option c camera that fits your budget and schedule.
Cheers and good luck with your new online TV work!
Thanks for your reply and thanks for the info, Gary. Do you have any idea how the video recording quality of the 5D compares to camcorders like Panasonic HC-X900M or the Canon HF G10? Is it just as good or is it even better (as some people claim it to be)?
The only difference will be that you have control over how much shallow depth of field you can utilize. Those other cameras will mostly give you deep DOF.
Wow, thanks for the awesome answer, Bill I am in no rush to get the camera just yet, so I may just wait for the 70D (if released) and compare it to the other cams on the market. Otherwise we'll have to look at the cameras you listed under option C.
Thanks again for the fantastic reply.
Gary - many thanks to you also for taking the time to answer my questions
