Sony's Professional Solutions Division's Chief Technology Officer, Hugo Gaggioni, explains the basics of the XAVC codec, and the power and benefits of its use.
the dual-pass aspect sounds impressive. i'm wondering what it means when he says that the codec has to conform at the decoding end to satisfy the mpeg4 standard. does that just mean that third party developers have an easier time writing for the codec? because it seems to me that in the end, all that really matters is how attractive the codec is to post-prod folks for various types of production, that it might become the default or preferred codec for a significant portion of the market. i believe this may have been a factor in the limited success of the xdcam cameras; xdcam = transcoding time.
It can't possibly be encoding 2 pass in realtime unless the camera can see into the future before you've shot it. Maybe a two pass encode of frame by frame yes, but true 2 pass is when the whole video is reviewed and the the bit rate adjusted accordingly for the 2nd pass. The other thing he said was it's high profile, high level 5.2 spec h.264. Anybody know what's new in h.265 which is supposedly been finalized?
