Video Noise Problem With My DVX100A......

Hello,

I have owned my DVX100A for about 7 months now and all i can say is i am very happy with it other then this noise problem i am getting! Before the 100A i borrowed a friends DVX100 for 2 months and before that I owned a Sony DSR-PD150. When i was using my friends DVX100 i was very happy with it and did not want to give it back, and i thought "Man if im really happy with the 100 i am going to freak out when i get my 100A"! Well its been the contrary, i get very un-filmic shots and enoying grain noise! This is making me very upset to the point that i am currently looking for someone in my area to swap with. Is there anyway i can reduce the noise and make my 100A 24PA footage look and feel like the DVX100?

:dankk2:

sh*t...
and im planning on buying the 100A model.... dammit...
guess its not an improvememt eh? thought all 3 model should create same footage...no way to test it before purchasing eh?

Progressive scan mode produces more noise than 60i (or PAL 50i) using. Cinelike, Cinelike-D or Cinelike-V gamma produces more noise than Normal gamma. Cinelike matrix enriches color and could, in concert with other settings, over saturate the video (adding noise). Auto Gain brightens a dark image but adds noise. High (+ levels) chroma levels adds noise. Detail level and and Detail Coring can smooth noise but it can also soften video at extreme settings.

Poor lighting or over exposure, can excacerbate noise. Without more detail its tough to offer any suggestions.

Comparing the DSR PD-150 is irrelivent as it does not shoot progressive. Unless you are comparing 60i to 60i?

Also describe the "noise" and the play back device (computer monitor, CRT, LCD/Plasma TV? Are you playing 24p footage on an NTSC TV. If so are you getting noise or interlacing artifacts, or both?

Some details are needed.

With all the questions and concerns you have expressed in this forum in the last week I would suggest that you rent the camera for a week and shoot with it in its various modes and settings to see if it fits you needs. I would also suggest that you consider the 100b since it has many improvements over the 100 and 100a including noise abatement.

Good shooting

yea, if i had waited two extra weeks for my DVX purchase, i would of had a 100B :(

There are plenty in here who own a 100a myself included. I also have a 100b but both are used reqularly. If you want a sample of what the 100a can do with a little time and patience to learn how to use it go to http://www.pinelakefilms.com Disjecta makes nature films and his posted collection is very impressive. Even more so whn you consider that you are viewing web compressed output.

I have a 100a, and i cant say that the 100 was any less noisy. infact ithink the 100 was more noisy....

for a noise "free" image try this,

Detail -3
Vdetail -3
Coring +7
Chroma level -3
MAster ped -6
Cinegamma
Norm Matrix
Skin Dtl ON ( ihate this feature but it smooths out even colored areas)

Also, make sure your lowest gain amount is set to off and not 3db.

Shoot your images making sure you use as much of your available dynamic range as possible. If that means shooting a scene that is ment to be very dark and moody too bright, do it because you can darken it in post. The Digital Signal Processor chip, needs to have a low and high value from which to compute the other values that make up the image. If you shoot it too flat, no highlights, no dark areas, you will get noisy footage.

I suspect user error here. You just need practice. dont take it to heart, that swhat were here for, a year ago i didint know flat contrast caused noisy footage either.

Thank You:) That scene file works great and my final question to close this post, should i take the time and White B. or use the color presets??????

depends on the situation. if youre gonna stay indoors fora shoot and 32K preset looks good, stick with it. but if your in a place with mixed lighting do it manually.
