VIDEO: NAB 2012 - Blackmagic Designs First Look

Question - why does everyone want this camera so much? Why just get an ATMOS Samurai or something, and still retain XLR, ND Filters, a larger sensor, Better ergos and physical controls, etc.?

This is a real question, not an argument. Is the dynamic range a lot better? Or are people wanting to use the EF lens mounts (but you can get that for the AF100, too... coupled with a Samurai seems like a better setup?)

Thanks for helping me understand! :)

This camera shoots raw 12bit video. Something no other camera in its price range can do.

Also it claims 13 stops dynamic range, which I *believe* (could be wrong) no other camera in this price range does either.

For $3k I don't see anything close to what this camera can do. Plus, electronic control of EF lenses. They've hit a price/performance that really resonates with people. Heck, even if this camera can't do everything perfect, it could be a great 'B' camera even with those specs.

Sure, there are a few issues for some people, sensor is smaller than I want, can't change the internal battery it sounds like, but 12-bit RAW 13DR. I think it shines where other cameras do not. That's why I think it might be a good camera for people who don't mind multicamera.

And I gotta say, the highlight handling looks fantastic so far.

Plus it takes cheap-priced SSD, has Thunderbolt, large LCD, records straight to ProRes and DNxHD... what other camera does that for under 3k$?

I'm a bit confused about lens mount options. Site says EF and ZF. ZF is Zeiss's Nikon mount so is it also compatible with standard F mount? Is it interchangeable or have adapters?

QUESTION:

Can you inquire about the possibility of at least getting 60P Log ProRes out of the camera? Even if in a future update? And in that vane, if so, incremental frame rates or is that asking too much?

Read about it, saw it, seems really awesome, we all know all the benefits, but there are a couple of things -- the video said the sensor size is "four thirds" and the BlackMagic person I talked to there at the booth said it was "four thirds", but in the published specifications it is a little smaller than 4/3.

Second, I keep hearing it being said that it will support EF and "ZF" mount, but at the booth the person there said that it is only Canon mount, there is no Nikon mount. Perhaps you have to use a Nikon->Canon adapter on the end of the Canon mount?

Third, as per the discussion about lens mounting -- what I saw at the show would most definitely not allow any other lens mounts, at least not without a hacksaw. The mount is molded extruded from the body, and it's a long depth. You are not going to be able to fit m43 or S16 or c-mount or PL primes on this camera; the only thing it could use is Canon EF lenses (and probably EF-S of course) or Nikon lenses with the aforementioned adapter.

Would love to be wrong, but I looked at the physical construction of it and unless they're selling multiple models, I don't see how you're going to get other lenses on it.

Thats going to make wide angle a little tricky...... EF mount tonkina 11-16mm here I come.

According to John Brawley, they're looking at PL and m4/3 mount down the road, so perhaps different bodies will pop up later this year?

Thanks for Clarifying the mount Barry. I was really confused by the ZF term - like they were avoiding saying Nikon for some weird reason.
Yeah, I'm sure if the camera is a runaway success (which we expect) it only makes sense for them to add additional lens mount options.

Definitely want to get this - I already have a Scarlet - but I was going to buy Resolve anyways for the 4K (free lite version is HD only), so it's a no brainer. The thing that bothers me most about it is the fixed LCD display's angle. Like any DSLR though, we'll have to rig it out with a lot of accessories to make it truly functional for cinema shooting.

The size of the sensor doesn't bother me: on fast moving indie shoestring budget pictures, focus tends to be fairly sloppy - I dont need the extra challenge of S35mm or FF DOF on the types of shoots I'd used this for.

Let's hope the lens mount options extend to more than just EF lenses/mount. That would be one fairly large oversight on what could be a great camera. There's no reason they couldn't have a better mounting system that works with more mounts, i.e. AF-100, FS-100. I think more people would prefer a camera that's more versatile in terms of lens use vs. having controllable iris for Canon Lenses.
