hey there, went to the shops the other day and tested the 1st lens i'm buying...

sigma 50mm f1.4... seemed great for the 5 mins i tested.

while in video mode (live view mode) is it possible to lock your focus using the auto focus before you hit record?

i know that while recording its over to manual focus, thought it was possible to set up focus before pressing record?

any advise would be very welcome for this newbie 5D2 owner

Yes. Using the AF-ON button you can use the camera's auto focus system prior to pressing record. There are TWO modes. the first will drop the mirror and use the AF sensors and the second will use contrast detection within the video. The first method is both quicker and more reliable but does produce the noise of the mirror moving.

Also, note that it's not enough to press the AF-ON button, you have to press AND HOLD it until focus is achieved.

i have to mention the ghost town feel of the Canon 5D section of dvxuser.com... i came from the GH1 section that is full of new posts.

thanks again for your reply mate!

The 5D is a little older with more websites dedicated to it. It's understandable that since there is no new information around for the 5D the enthusiasm for forums wanes a little. As soon as the 5D3 is announced (or seriously rumoured) - just watch this forum come alive again!

Thanks! Finally, somebody explained this.
