aside from Videomaker (which end up as coasters real quick), and HD VideoPro (too much high end stuff for me)...what magazines are you all reading, if any that fall somewhere in between...i'm looking for toilet reading for cinematography, editing, camera technique, and some new product info...would like to subscribe to one or two if there's anything good. i live in san diego, and i can't find anything but the aforementioned. thanks all!

American Cinematographer. Very technical and high end, but the articles are written in a very non tech way & equally entertaining. I think everyone can get something from it.

i'll look at that one Ryan...seen many of your posts, and you have educated me more than you know sofar, thanks man

Should have some digital issues and past archives available for you to read. Check it out and see if it's for you. I learn so much from every issue. And it's always cool to see how they do the big hollywood setups.

absolutely...i'm sure i break a lot of rules when i shoot (check my vimeo link above..sloppy haha), but 9 months ago, i never owned a camera...im also a 32 year old family guy with a wife and kid, but movies have always put me in a place i could never duplicate outside of my own mind...i'm just trying to make pictures of things i see or want to see.

I used to read Videomaker and Videography. I still have a subscription to them, but Videography is usually only interesting for one article, and they focus too much on the uber high-end equipment. Videomaker seems to rehash a lot of the same articles, and their reviews of anything I'm interested in (like an HMC150 for example) are kinda weak and too late. By the time they've reviewed anything I might need or want I've already found all I need to know here or elsewhere online. Not that they are worthless magazines, but honestly, I rarely read them anymore and only skim them and read an article or two.

I used to occasionally pick up a magazine called Cinefex, which focused on visual effects. The articles were very in-depth and gave my brain a real workout sometimes. A few years ago they had a great two part article called State of the Art (part 1) and State of the Business (part 2). It is the most informative and revealing piece I've ever encountered on the visual effects industry. They talked about how it is nearly impossible for an effects house to make anything close to a profit, or sometimes even break even. A great read if you can find it. The first part of the article was in issue 100 and the second part was in 101.

here is their site -- http://www.cinefex.com/

I wouldn't mind checking out American Cinematographer since I haven't read one in a while. I've gotten issues of them in the past when Borders used to carry them a few years ago. How much is a subscription? Expensive or pretty reasonable?

Truthfully, I find it so much easier and practical to get my technical info online, here, and for specific topics I get books that cover those subjects. When I want to just relax and read a magazine article from time to time, I've currently been trying to read about the world and other subjects that I find interesting. I think that even someone solely focusing on cinematography or post production can broaden their palate by venturing out of the realm of film and video related material (not to imply that you guys don't already do this, but merely babbling on about another one of my crazy theories on life).

Besides Videomaker and Videographer, I was getting a free subscription to EGM, but they went under recently, so no more of those. I've also been getting some astronomy mags since I find the subject interesting.

i still get Modern Drummer, because in my former life (1983-2007), i was a very active rock drummer, and i still need to read about it from time to time.....sold my last drumkit for my Canon A1 last year...best thing i ever did.

A1 user here too, both my camera and my steak sauce. In and after high school I played guitar and bass but could never get a proper band together. Filmmaking it is then.

Besides American Cinematographer, I'm suscribed to Studentfilmmakers and I like it a lot, interesting articles, good interviews and really good tips from real world pros. I got the 24 month subscription with the student discount... best dollar ever spent
