Video Game High School

I don't know how familiar you guys are with Freddie Wong, but long story short he decided to make short action / video game videos and upload them (one per week) on youtube. He's created a huge following (youtube.com/freddiew), and for obvious reasons. He's good at what he does, and he's funny. A while back, he started a kickstarter campaign for an online series called "Video Game High School." It reached the needed $75,000 in hours. HOURS. It ended up pulling in $273,000 when it was said and done.

"Why are you telling me this?! To rub it in my face that he gets to do great stuff and I can't?" No, I'm just saying this because he got an idea to shoot some short videos that were fun and a learning experience, stayed diligent to his own deadlines of one video a week, and now he's doing much bigger things. And not even on someone else's projects. His own stuff. Very awesome! I LOVE seeing stuff like this happen.

It's easy to get bogged down and say, "Well, I would shoot [your dream indie film] if I had $[random number] and a crew to help me out. But I don't. So I'll not do anything." Trust me. I understand fully. And sometimes it's even harder when you don't live in LA or NYC. I live in Mustang, Oklahoma. Do you know how many people have even heard of a RED camera or even a DVX100 in Mustang? I'm going to guess 2 (my wife has to hear it all from me). Even smaller still is a little town called Claremore, Oklahoma (population 17,000ish). A kid from there got involved with some others and started making short videos. One of which is one of my all time favorites. Well, Claremore really isn't a video production hub, so he got connected online with Jannard and now he's living in Dubai working for a prince shooting video. Working for a prince. In Dubai. I think he just turned 21, too. He realized what he wanted and did it (he's also a SUPER nice guy which really helps, too).

I don't know. Maybe it's just one of those days where I've seen too many "poor me" kinds of things and I just wanted to let you know that "No. Not poor you. Go. DO!" You're never going to get anything done if you're just bummed about things not being perfect. Go. Shoot. Have fun.

"But I don't know what to shoot!" Well, WarFEST has started. Why not start there?

Also, here's episode 1 in case you're curious.

(episode 3 is now on YT, and episode 4 is on rocketjump.com)

Fact check: I know several people who are involved with video production who live in Mustang. And, Joseph got his break after working a tour with the band Hanson from Tulsa (near Claremore).

Also, you have a very coveted position with a worldwide company that is full of potential.

But, yeah, I get your point. :)

I love this series! Very good stuff.

Just trying to figure out where they're located. Everything is "canadian" (even have classic mounties as targets), and I know Harley (epic meal time host) is from my neck of the woods in Montreal. Though that's not montreal from the looks of it, and they have Zachary Levi in it? I wonder if it's Vancouver or something...

Or even harder when you don't even live in the US... Do a Google search: Bloemfontein, South Africa. I'm not sure how many people even know the difference between film and video over here. When I started some years ago I was the ONLY ONE trying to make something. Anyway, I still try. As it goes: It could always be worse.
