I am highly impressed with this, even though I don't even have a game system.

they are getting good.

From someone that "understands",

Borderline PTSD patients ARE gonna go over the edge if they experience this. Realism can be taken too far........

This hit home and disturbed me. The movement and gestures were all too real.

Don't think I've ever seen someone react like that to a video game, but yes...it looks cool.

I don't know how to respond. I had real rounds coming at me before. Part of me understands you may have never experienced that, another part is pissed off. This video was realistic.

That's where I will stop talking now. I hate video games, don't have a system, never plan to own one. It's a BTDT thing for me. Now, confirmed....no VG's

That is why it is wise for war-centric shooter games to have their conflicts revolve around something imaginary and less close to today's reality of war. Something like space marines vs. alien invaders, or average joes fighting off hordes of zombies.

it looks awesome. the only problem i have with shooters like this is i'm horribly overmatched and die way too easily.

That, I agree with. Keep it out of recent reality, despite the wanna-be's wanting to experience "real" combat.

LOL, virtual "real" combat. It looks real, but they have NO idea about the real emotions and fear you experience during the real thing. That's the "upsettin' aspect". When these gamers play, they think "this is combat, hell yeah." No, it ain't. Holding your buddy's lungs in his chest with your own hands 'cause an idiot shot a golden bb is combat.

Deep breath............... This was real for me.

I have that same problem, unless I devote an insane amount of time to a multiplayer shooter, I get splattered, meleed, or sniped a lot.

I like the co-op modes like horde in Gears of War or firefight in Halo. Just more fun all around IMO.

I mostly play the more sci-fi oriented games, but I do on occasion play some of the war games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, and I've never thought those games could truly replicate what real combat would be like.

And I can understand why someone who has experienced real life combat would not want to play a game like that.

Of course, the company making a game like this is entitled to make the game they want. They should obviously be aware that if they make something extremely realistic that reminds combat veterans of actual combat, that some of those veterans might not like seeing the types of things they had to go through.

I suppose it is like going on a roller coaster. If you have those safety harnesses holding you in it is merely entertainment versus actually being launched into the air or falling from a great height. For example: I a big fan of the zombie genre of movies, fiction, and video games. Let's say one day we turn on the news and find that zombies in fact do exist? I'd never want to experience in real life a horde of zombies surrounding me and trying to eat me. That would be the worst thing ever.

Not that it remotely compares to being a soldier or experiencing combat, but I have to drive a lot for my day job. Coming home to play a driving simulation or racing video game is the last thing I would prefer to do to unwind and entertain myself.

It's all good, Nek. It did push a button for me, which is why I brought it up. And if I DID have to try to relate combat to someone, I might even suggest this game, but as an observer, not a player. Let them observe it, and not being able to do anything would assist in the experience.

That or the opening sequence to "Saving Private Ryan". I actually had tears in my eyes, and almost walked out when I first saw SPR.

LOL, but, it's all good. Geez, the first time I saw that promo, I was "WTF???????, this sucks, somebody has been selling us out!!!!"

To be honest I really don't like all these modern warfare type games. I beleive games should be escapism not trying to bring you a 'realistic' experience based on real events.

I would much prefer to play something like Doom, Quake and Crysis etc.

Doom, and Duke Nukem'!!!!!!!

Those I remember. Wait, I think I just aged myself again. Ummmm, I was mistaken. I don't know what you are talking about. Yeah. That's it.

Duke Nukem! how could I forget that one. Hey don't be ashamed, I'm 26 and grew up on games like Doom, Duke Quake etc.

I had an atari back in the late 80's before the Nintendo came out, and I remember having a Z X Spectrum my father had, and it had this boring racing car game lol. Plus you had to use a tape!!! Good times!!!

BF3 looks pretty damn good. I bought BFBC2 but only played it for 10 min. Might give this a good go by the looks of it.

Looks beautiful, but boring.

It's like Microsoft Flight Simulator or racing games that are about racing and not about crashing.

Not my thing. I wanna kill aliens and crash cars in city environments.

If games were regulated to merely the unrealistic, then why shouldn't the same be said for movies? Let's forget about all conflict and make space marines vs. aliens by the droves! 'Cause, you know, that will be cool and all... (yes, that is full of sarcasm but there is a point)

Just because someone does not appreciate video games being more than just mere "games" doesn't mean everyone thinks that way. Besides that, this is just the next step in graphical evolution - not really something new at all (or if you think this is something new, then you will be sorely pissed off when the next generation games hit...)
It's an improvement, yeah, but so has every visual been over the last decade - an improvement over what came before. Visually, it looks damn good. As for the rest...yeah, well.

And if you think the "dumb kids of today" think that THIS is how combat is, well... you obviously haven't been around very many smart kids (or any kid who has family who went overseas in any recent conflict). I do believe that anyone who hasn't been there, done that, can truly understand what it's like, but that doesn't mean that they think THIS is the "reality" for those who HAVE been there, you know? Relax, take a beer, kick back and let go of it - if it bothers you THAT much then it's probably best just to forget about it and not vent all over the place.

Oddly enough, Duke Nukem Forever is finally going to be released this June. After like a decade of development.

I also hear there will be Doom 4 in the coming years as well, so we will have some space marines vs. demons.

I've never been in the military, or in danger of any bullet storms (though I did live in Memphis for two years). However, there have been a few times in games that have actually scared me with it's realism. The first time was playing a game called "Condemned" at night. Scared the crap out of me. I'm an avid fan of the Halo series, but there's nothing "real" in that to me (although the latest release, "Reach," was really sad). It's all sci-fi. I had problems with "The Airport Level" in Modern Warfare 2. Basically, you go in undercover helping the terrorists wipe out anything that moves in an airport. There's an option to skip that level, which I probably should have taken.

But yeah, they are real. And they're getting more and more real because the gamers want better. It makes sense, though. Why would you want a camera that only does what cameras were doing 4 years ago for the same price?

The biggest issue I found with CODs and especially MW2 was that I'd spend hours in front of the TV getting really STRESSED. My armpits would be sweating, I'd hold my breath when taking a shot, I'd get incredibly anxious when rushing to defuse a bomb or trying not to get killed in a Team Deathmatch.

I'm all about hyper realistic graphics, but I have to think that some of these games are going to have long term physiological impact on some people.

I try to just stick to Madden nowadays -- or nothing at all.

I edited a trailer for Hitman 2 many years ago, and remember having serious moral qualms about the game and my work on it. In the end I figured the trailer would get made anyway so I might as be the one to get paid for it, but I remember that feeling. Now many years later, I'm not sure anyone but the most reality impaired take these simulations as reflecting reality, no matter how detailed. You're still sitting safely on a couch somewhere. Perhaps once we get into fully immersive virtual reality, a line will be crossed that will need to be debated.
