Video Gain

Does the video gain (L,M,H) only affect the screen brightness? Also, is it only in VCR mode or does it affect the screen in Camera mode as well?

no. it doesn't only affect the brightness the LCD screen. The difference in illumination that you see on the LCD will also be recorded onto the tape. However, if you can help it, NEVER use the gain. It can add a tremendous amount of noise to a picture and yield pretty crappy results. But, in an absolute pinch, if it's between shooting in a very low light situation and getting a very noisy shot vs. getting nothing at all, I guess you're stuck with it.

Hey, it's better to have this option than not to have it. But, seriously, try to never use it if you can help it.

The gain I am talking about is the one on the side of the camera, not in the menu. It was on M and it didn't seem to affect the quality that much where the light was good, except for the reds. Isn't there a setting in the menu where you can disable the gain switch?

I don't believe you can disable that switch. But the gain on the side of the camera is the one I am talking about. If you use it, it WILL degrade the image quality.

is there a way to turn gain from 6db (m) to about 3db ?
i only ask as when i shot a gig last week a guy next to me with a sony hd camcorder said you can get away with about 3 db of gain for a low lit show ?

I had set mine to zero. This is probably why I didn't notice any difference in quality when I found the switch was set to "M."

In my experience with the DVX, if you absolutely have to use gain, never use anything above 6db. The picture gets way too noisy once you go higher than that.
