Video Formats - Can the DVX100 do the job?

Hi I`m new to this forum. I work as a professional photographer and I am starting with video. I have recently tested the Panasonic DVX 100 and I am considering buying one. Now I have information from a client for which I am supposed to shot something that he wants to have specific kinds of formats : "Digital Betacam, DVCam or DVCPro or any other digital format commonly used in the broadcasting industry" I know of course that the DVX is not a Betacam, but I couldn`t find any information on the Panasonic Webpage if it is doing DVCam or DVCPro?

And:If I am shooting on the DVX can I put the result on Betacam Tapa as a master -thats what the client wants as well.

I don`t know whom to ask quickley right now , as I am coming from the photography world so any help here would be really great!

DVCAM is bit-for-bit compatible with the miniDV that the DVX100 uses.

Betacam is an analog tape format. You can easily dub DVX miniDV footage over to Betacam SP or Digital Betacam or DVCAM, you just need to find a place that has the decks.

The miniDV tapes from your DVX would play back in any DVCAM deck, so you wouldn't even have to get it dubbed to DVCAM tape (although you could if you want).

I am constantly reminded of how little I know of the DV world when reading your posts, Barry. Thanks for being here for us! :-*

Dear Barry,

thanks a lot for your reply I really appreciate it!!

Now, I looked further into this and the client sayed they are not going to accept MiniDV because they where experiencing technical problems. They couldn`t tell me though if the material was shot on the Panasonic. As I never heard of a problem with the AG DVX I called Panasonic and they where puzzled too. I wonder what the Problem couldbe. The client now says they are only accepting DVCAM, DVCPRO, & DIGITAL BETACAM.

As I dont want to shot with the Sony Cam I spoke again to some people and got the suggestion that I should just shot with the Panasonic and then have everything transfered to Digital Betacam. Does anyboday have advice on that (costs? potential problems?)

Also several technicans from Panasonic where insisting that MiniDV is differnet to DVCam - though they said that a lot of Dvcam machines can play MiniDv

any advice woould be greatly appreciated!

The only difference between miniDV and DVCam is the speed at which the tape records. It's like super SP. It's only purpose is to help prevent dropouts. The quality is the same, though.

You could also transfer quite easily from mini DV to DVCAM for much cheaper to Beta **. If you knew someone with a sony PD150 or PD170, you could just hook up the two cams vie firewire and record from one to the other.

Re: Video Formats - Can the DVX100 do the job?

Scharky's exactly correct... you can do a firewire dub to any DVCAM camera or deck. Just be sure to buy a mini-DVCAM tape so they don't give you any funny looks when you hand the footage over.
