Video format for youtube?

Hi, I'm wanting to do some educational videos with my Nikon d5300 the only problem is the HUGE file size (100mb/minute)
I'm shooting 1080HD, normal quality setting, and 24 fps, shutter speed at 1/40.

The file is a Mov file. Do i need to convert all my files to Mpeg? Or some other format for youtube? What program is usually go for this?

Youtube will compress the video, no matter what you feed it with.
But assuming you want to reduce the bandwith of your uploads, you can use VidCoder to compress to a desired bitrate or filesize. Works great. It can either output an .mkv or a more compliant .mp4 video.
I always encode my "master" videos with it, and the results are great.

*That being said, Youtube will recompress your video, even if you downscale it to 720p and reduce your bitrate. Vimeo on the other hand, will keep it more likely as you upload it.

Youtube supported formats: MOV (.mov), 3GP (.3gp, .3g2, .3gpp), MPEG-4 (.mp4), FLV (.flv), AVI (.avi), MPEGS (.mpg), WMV (.wmv), WebM (.webm)

I guess you mean 100 MB/min. That translates to 13 Mbps, which is not HUGE. Not even close. Actually that's a very low bitrate, you probably are not even using the highest quality mode.

Also: why 1/40? the usual thing would be 1/50 in Europe (and other 50 Hz coutnries) and 1/60 in the US (and other 60 Hz countries).
