Video editing question

I just started using Avid Xpress Pro and I'm trying to edit some video clips. There are two issues:

1. Is there a way to adjust the video clip to change the "trapezoid" like on a computer moniter?

2. How can I isolate a specific part of the screen in a video and make it fill the entire screen? The analog of this for still pictures is Pan & Zoom but I don't know if you can do this with videos.

I'm an absolute beginner so very basic and straightforward instructions on how to accomplish these things would be appreciated.

I'm unsure what you mean by this question. Can you try rephrasing it again and I'll see if I can help.

I think you're looking for the Resize Effect. It's in the Effects Pallet under Image. Apply that effect to the clip and then manipulate the effect controls to get the look you want.

Also, you might want to watch the tutorial CD that came with your Avid. It will help you a great deal. Avid is a fantastic editor, but it has a learning curve.

Hope that helps.

Re: Video editing question

Thanks for your help so far Chris.

What I mean for the first issue is when I was recording my video off of a laptop monitor the screen was slightly tilted to the back so the top of the image looks slightly farther away than the bottom resulting in the screen having the shape of a trapezoid. I was wondering if I could change the ratio of the top of the image to the bottom so that the screen would look rectangular again.

The second issue is much more important rignt now because, to rephrase what I would like to do, I want to crop out about 1 cm off of the edges of the movie and retain a rectangular region in the middle, which I will zoom in on so that the size of the screen remains the same. I will try the Resize Effect and see if that gets the job done.

I'm using the professional version of Avid Xpress Pro at school so I don't have access to the tutorial CD that came with the program.

Re: Video editing question

You want to try usung the 3D effect. Scale the image to the right size and you can then take each corner and adjust it to any angle.

Re: Video editing question

I'm still new to Avid so if you could give me some explicit instructions on how how to use the 3d effect (step-by-step what do I click on?) that would be appreciated.

Re: Video editing question

You might have to go to a program like aftereffects, or use photoshop or photozoom pro to resize it square using tiff files export. You can also resize the edges at the same time. Look into the technical section of this forum under uprezing but use the standard 720x486 instead of the 720x640 for widescreen setup.

Re: Video editing question

In terms of resizing the movie. I used one of the options but it only lets me change the size setting in integer multiples. Is there a way to get finer control over the size of the screen? It would be ideal to automatically increase the size of the screen after cropping the edges until at least one of new edges is the same size as it was previously. I'm resizing movies of different dimensions and I just want to standardize the results. It seems I won't be able to do that by just using the integer multiple zooming.
