Video Dropouts from a Bad Tape ?

I went out late today and squeezed off a few video shots to practice my panning (which still sucks), but when I got home and captured the footage I noticed some horrible goblins (Video Dropouts) or even something worse in my footage. It didn't occure in every shot, but in atleast half of them you can see it.

Is it a Video Tape problem ?
Or something much worse like a video head problem ?

Sorry in advance for the size of the screen grab, but I wanted the problem to be easy enough to spot so I could get an accurate opinion on what the problem is.

I changed tape and didn't notice any dropouts again during the ten or so minutes that I shot on it. So I'm praying that the first tape (the one included with the dvx) was just a bad one. ???

I've had the same problem too across a number of tapes. It's fixable, kinda, if you want to go in and paint out the dropouts by hand, but that's a pain. I've tried cleaning the heads in both the deck (a JVC BR-DV3000) and the camera, but it still happens a little too regularly for my taste. (By contrast, it NEVER used to happen on my old TRV900 Sony)

I also get the occasional capture abort because of a 'lapse in the cadence of the pulldown' or something, which hasn't been critical to date, but really will be a pain in the ass if it happens in the middle of a good take on the short film I'm planning to shoot.

Are you capturing from a deck? Someone was telling me that that might be the problem, if the deck isn't so hot or you're running different tape stocks through it, for the same reason as you should always run the same brand of tape in your camera. But decks, they're there for capture; how are we supposed to control the kinds of tapes clients send us? Irritating.

That's a very common problem and happens to everyone. Even on digibeta,DVC pro,HD, etc will have tape glitches. The problem can be many things. All we can do is shoot backups if possible.

I have been sticking to the same brand Panny's DVM63's. ;)
Well atleast I'm glad I'm not alone in this.

I agree with you Jason, I had a few dropouts on some great takes and I have to go back and refilm them next week. I dont think that our $3500 cameras should be doing this...does Panasonic have an answer to this problem?

i never noticed this with my sony, but maybe i was never looking close enough. little glitches i guess i can live with, cause you and i are probably the only people that will notice them. but capture aborts are a little more annoying :)

Re: Video Dropouts from a Bad Tape ?

MY Sony TRV80 (real consumer) is very sturdy and never had any dropouts either. I'm going to call up Panny next week and ask them what the deal is

Re: Video Dropouts from a Bad Tape ?

Indeed... I have a Panasonic GS70 which has NEVER had a drop out yet...

i have aTRV70, ive been havig massiv audio problems realted to tapes. i accidentally mixed A sony tape in with maxells, JVC and Fuji, and the lubricant issue might have clogged teh head. it too like 2 weeks to get it clean. cinstantly taping black over and over on to a jvc tape. it can happen. could just be dust from the packaging, or the cam sitting around in a box for months.
