Video dropout after playing Sony tapes

Has anyone had this happen to them? I have two Sony mini-dv tapes I shot using a PD150 several months ago and just tried to load some footage from the tapes via firewire onto my Mac using my new (less than 6 hrs of operation) DVX100B. Everything was going fine for about 15 minutes - and then the DVX just stopped responding...no play, no rewind, no nothing.
I removed the Sony tape, inserted a blank Panasonic tape, recorded a few minutes of throwaway footage as a test and checked the playback. I kind of freaked out when I saw big blue bars on the screen during playback. I could see my footage but it had blue bars horizontally over the picture. It's as if the DVX only recorded half the field...some sort of crazy progressive scan? Anyway, I ordered a head cleaning tape just to be safe but it's kind of freaking me out...on a brand new camera!!
I've heard talk of not mixing tapes when shooting (I only use Panasonic on my DVX) but when playing back too? What do I do with the handful of Sony tapes I shot when all I had to use was a PD150?

mixing tapes whether it's shooting or recording will dirty your heads. If you want to play back different tapes, capture them in a crappy cheapo min-dv cam, spare your dvx heads the horror.

Yup! do not mix tapes. A good clean should fix it. My daughters both have Sony cameras & send them to me to edit. If I do not clean my Deck Camera before using them, I have the same problem. Stick with Pany Tapes.
