Video Clip Of Hvx200 Blowup To 35mm Film At Laser Pacific.

PappasArts

Veteran
What I have here is a small sample clip of what I filmed
off the screen at Laser Pacific when I was covering the screening. The noise you see is from my Canon SD550 that shoots 640x480 at 30fps video and not the HVX.

However these clips demonstrates how well the HVX200 holds up to a 35mm blowup for big screen presentation.

It looks really good in my opinion

Scroll down the page to news story (...NEWS 206 ) and the link to clip
is there below the photo of the filmmakers at the event

Thank Michael.

It looks like the HVX200 holds up fairly well to 35mm blowup.
I wish I could of seen that. Not bad for a 6K camera!

Again, thanks again for your updates. I really enjoy your web page
and thoughts on these cameras.

Now if we can just get our hands on these dang HVX200s.

Awesome Michael, thank you very much for takin the time to put this up. Did the footage remind you of old Super16? I keep getting that impression from looking at certain shots and especially this footage, great stuff! Thanks for keeping up the nice and un-biased site for everyone to enjoy as well! =)

Anybody could try this test with Canon Xl H1 :) ? Laser Pacific it's interested about it?
Michael Pappas what do you think about results that could have the Canon in a 35mm blowup, considering the more high-resolution advantage?

wow, danilo, maybe you should join a canon forum

Go to see this : http://snagle.net/
And the nightmare's noise problem will cause the same fear that I've about Hvx200.
I can accept that high resolution it's not ever'ything (Canon advantage), but crappy noise it's a nightmare. Still waiting someone tries Barry suggestion about noise, so we can see clean footage from Hvx200.
P2 it's a great advantage of Panasonic and I love it. Also love variable framerate, but I'm still waiting to see "stunning" footage from Hx200. I hope to see great footage soon, very soon. I'm sure that something in those menu of Hvx200 can produce great image if we know how to tweak it.
I'm a not a canon fanboy, I'm brand agnostic as Emanuel :)

Cheers:)

Rodrigo,
I sure hope not.
The 48 Hour footage over at snagle.net sure makes you think it does.

It makes me wonder how they could of overlooked the noise settings (gain, gamma, detail, ect....)

The HVX hasn't got a problem with noise, Danilo

I want to believe *insert X-Files music theme here*

p.s.: I forget to thanks Michael Pappas for 35mm footage, I really wanted to see it. Thanks:)

maybe, maybe not.
But you really need to be tweaking the camera and making sure you have enough lighting....that's reasonable.
I understand Danilo's concern, part of this is noise,
part of it is Resolution.
The resolution, or lack of it, is leading some peopel to question whether or not this the type of "real high def camera" that they need...
(The High Def from a the HVX can look worse than DV it you don't know what you are doing - and this has caught the wind in a few throats)

Problem is we have beenleft to imagine our dream camera from Pany for soooo long...

I think I will get an HVX, if I really can't get on until a week befor NAB, yeeah I'm gonna wait and see...

-----
Now all that being said,

Danilo,
the Canon Resolution in 24f is really not that much better than the HVX -
and if you are interested specifically in film out record 60i.
But as has been said, if you want to do the festival circuit - no film out is needed.

Also beware of what you see over the web - most often it has been compressed

I thiink I am going to try the HVX - it depends on a few things - how fast I can get it - I need something sooner rather than later...
I am very intregued with the Canon, but it just doesn't work for me for a variety of reasons,
I am leaning more towards a 3k FX1 as a temporary solution (Higher Res/ good low light) for less than 1/2 the price and waiting 6-9 mos for the next best thing.

I need to be getting a lotta otherstuff with camera (35adaptor & lenses/Rods & pull focus etc) all the good stuff that requires a few grand,
Maybe I build the set up and work with a cheaper cam until the ideal cam or the cost comes down
I have been thinking that the FX1 as a compliment to the HVX anyway - yes I know no 24p (that's for post) But...it patches up the holes that have been talkied about with the HVX --- Higher Native Res/better low light, which is where th HVX picks up it's noise most ofter --
Again - these are issues that are avoidable, to a cetain extent, with the HVX...

and again, after all this is said & done, I probably will be picking on up anyway if I can sooner than later

cheers

Thanks Stevet,

It held up very good...Yes I wish I could get my hands on one for more testing... Not bad at all for 6K! That's an understatement too........

Your welcome Mr. Blonde. The footage did remind me of S16 of the early 90's. The HVX200 is cleaner than 90's S16 on the big screen at the same asa that's for sure.

300+ asa S16 ( Pre-S16 Vision stock ) can be very grainy: the HVX was not like that at all. There was some noise, however s16 has grain too.

Also, the camera was not a shipping model that was used for this project. We are learning from others weekly new ways to adjust the HVX200 to give off certain looks too. In my opinion, we have only scratched the surface of what the HVX200 can do..

Danilo, We don't really know how well the XLH1 will do on a big screen.

Funny thing about res is, more isn't always better. For example, i used to shoot with 3.4 mega pixel SLR , that SLR had less detail than 6 mega pixel cameras.

However the SLR at 3.4 could blow up to 11x14 or bigger and still look good and clean, where as the 6 megapixel looked like crap. It seemed sharper, but it was not better.

Resolution is only one factor in a list of many.

We just don't know yet, the H1 very well could look great, or it could look bad. Just because it looks good on monitors doesn't mean it will translate to film good.

The HVX200, did look very good transfered to 35mm film. We do know that, we have seen it. It will improve too, as more people learn how the HVX sees the world and learn to tweak it for better performance.

As I said above, it was a pre-production model that was used to film that material that was used for the film out. The HVX has improved I believe even more since then.

I am going to post the Slow-Motion material from the 35mm film out as well. That stuff looks awesome. I will let you all know when it's up....

Hi Michael Pappas, thanks for your thoughts and footage. I hope to see soon the slowmo footage.
The problem is that I don't believe for me will be possible to transfer a my short into a 35mm film. So the noise is my nightmare. I hope to see noise test soon.

The shot of the girl's hair in slow mo totally reminded me of texas chainsaw massacre. Loved the heavenly glow she has around her...Truly inspiring.

How much cost transfer Hvx200 footage to 35mm film?
For a short movie of 20 minutes?
In South of Europe, €500 per minute... In US, I don't know. But David Newman had in his website (Cineform) related a Film Transfer house that usually works with them, some like $10,000 for a 90min.s feature if I'm not wrong.

Emanuel, here in Europe we've some thieves...500€ for minute...ouch...in Italy 500€ means a milion of the old money-making (Lira), a monthly salary of a regular worker . For you american people it's as you had to pay 1000$ at minute...men you're so lucky...or some country in the world is paying too much for your economical benefit and advantages...:lipsrseal

Thanks soarprod but I'm sure that David Newman confirmed to me this price or something like that. And as we all know, David Newman is, well, is David Newman (period). So, I don't know why there are so different prices@yours... 'cause $450 it's something like similar than@ours. Well, with the conversion rate it always will be 30% less but not such difference...

BTW, anyone can get me a green card to fly to you?
