Video card for editing HDpro

I have quad G5 / 1 Firewire raid 500GB LaCie external Hard drive, 2 SATA internal drives and 2x300 RT raid Medea external hard drives with the proper ATA connection to the G5. I am going to purchase the HVX200 and use the HD and /or dVCpro 50 footage. The final goal is independent film to be digitally projected or transfered to 35mm.
Help: Do I still need a video card like KONA or Decklink and why? I assume I can capture the footage using FW... Anyway I need some smart advice. Thanks.
Alex

No you don't need a Kona or Decklink to ingest DVCProHD footage. You can use the AJ-PCS060G portable P2 storage drive and transfer over USB2 or you can simply transfer directly from the camera over firewire.

However if you want to monitor in HD while editing on something other than your cinema display you will need a video card that has the right output for the type of input your HD monitor has.

The Kona2 will give you hardware acceleration, as well as the Kona codecs which are great. It will also give you a realtime dual-link SDI output for monitoring and/or layout to tape. Hook up a plasma and monitor away. I just did an HD spot in dvcproHD and laid it out to the panasonic 1700 studio deck through the kona2 out of final cut. Worked like a charm. If you're going to be laying out to certain decks you'll need to consider tri-sync generators, etc. Certain decks have sync built in however.

My 2 cents.

If you want to output DVCProHD to tape you can also use firewire with the AJ-HD1200A. Its a very nice deck but the last time I tried to output to it over firewire it had problems. However that was a year or so ago and I'm sure what ever issues it had have been resolved by now. The decks a little pricey but you can use it for:

"Compact DVCPRO® HD/50/25, DVCAM and DV Player with Available DVCPRO HD® Recording and Available IEEE 1394 Interface"

Kai how much was the Kona2?

Yes Chuck.. there was a firmware updater on the AJ-HD1200A... about a year ago, dealt with some apple stuff.

and Alb.. quite a screaming system you got there.. im excited to hear how it performs.

ChuckS,

I've been trying to find confirmation of this but have been unable. You're sure the camera can't connect the NLE to the monitor like with DV?

Thanks,
Jeremy

How about matrox APVe or nvidia quadro FX 540, both have HD output
since there's no capture involved and my APVe came with the component HD ouput connector the only question is will my computer handle the load

KONA 2 on the Quad

KONA 2 on the Quad

Just a heads up on the Kona 2. There isn't one for the quad pci/e macs yet. The Kona LHe will work, but no Kona 2e yet.

With the breakout box it is about 2k. Well worth it though if you need he SDI in/outs.

Great point. I'm sure they're working on it though.
